New build for potential 4k gaming

Hey all,

I'm currently planning on treating myself to a new build. I'm looking to upgrade from my 3080 & 3700x to something capable of powering a 4k monitor.
I'm picking up a MSI MPG 272URX monitor so I'm trying to build with that in mind.

At the moment I'm thinking:
  • 9800x3d
  • Mobo TBC
  • 32Gb ram (maybe 64 gb?)
  • Porting over my 2tb Pcie 4 nvme
What I'm really struggling with is what GPU. I'm debating moving to team Red and picking up a 9070 XT but with the 5080 Super coming in the next few months I'm not sure if it's work hanging fire to my 3080 while I wait.

Could someone help me with which Mobo and Ram to go with / GPU recommendations?

Hi.

Memory.

32gb 6000mhz doesn't matter what cas it is as x3d chips don't care.

Mobo x870 if you want usb 4 or a b850 is enough for most but what size , matx ,ATX ?

Case wise I'm thinking a fractal North or a Corsair 400d so probably just stick with standard ATX

If you have a 3080, you should be pretty comfortable waiting, right? Unlikely the 5080 Super is going to be better value than a 9070 XT, but if you want the higher VRAM you'll need to wait for the Supers.

You need to answer the usb 4 question and budget ?

Any other preferences , WiFi, number of m2 slots, etc ?
WiFi 7 would be a bonus but I have a pcie card I can move from from my current built and update it to a 7 one later.

At least 2 nvme slots since I’ll be porting two over.

No real other preferences

yeah that’s what I’m thinking, I don’t really play a lot of intensive games (going to get bf6 though) but I can always run at a lower resolution in the mean time. I’m mainly going 4k oled for text quality.

edit: I suppose I can flog my 3080 to CEX and get £200 for it. So that would make a 9070Xt about £370

Oh that's cracking.

I think I'm gonna go for the Mobo, CPU and ram to begin with and hang fire until the 50 super series is out thank you

You are right, 4k gaming is simply not there yet.
This is what concerns me, I want an oled monitor because it’s cracking colours etc but from what I’ve heard text quality on 1440p qd-oled is a bit pants.

(I work from home as a software engineer so being able to read the code is important)

Text quality on the latest generation oleds
Even at 1440p is much better
And at 4k you may even find the text too small
And need to use scaling

As for the 3080 why cex?
You qualify for MM which would get you approx
£250 for a 3080 which is a pretty big % more than £200

Which games do you intend playing? You are not going to be able to max out the latest games at 4k but do you really need to? Any game can use sufficient effects to crush any GPU. And older games will run just fine. And then there's upscaling.

I've been gaming at 4k for over a decade, since GTX 780 Ti days. In fact, I bought my first 4k monitor from OCUK in April 2014, a Samsung U28D590.

Completely forgot about MM so that makes selling the old system more appealing now.

Yeah I’m not sure if people are just being too fussy about 1440p monitors text being too fussy. My local store named after the spicy food has the 1440p msi mag oled I might go and take a look at

i don’t really play a lot of super high end games.

My games of choice at the moment are the first outer worlds, stellaris, wow, ck3.

Planning on picking up bf6 and the new outer worlds, I would like to finally play through cyberpunk when I get some time

With UE games, 4K is a slideshow.

So play them at 1080p. I tried the Black Smith Wukong benchmark and got 60 fps at 1080p with everything maxxed on my RTX 4090. But you don't need everything maxxed.

But I play older games like Sniper Elite at 4k with everything maxxed. A good game is still a good game, no matter how old.
