Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm getting a friend to build me a mid range gaming pc. I've got some knowledge of gaming pc components so I do have a few requirements but I'm looking for other people's views or alternatives on these components. My budget is around £900-£1000 mark and I am not nterested in overclocking.

I5 cpu. 6500, 6600, 7500, 7600. Which one hits the sweet spot?

Nvidia 1060, 1070 or amd card? I will be playing games through my 42" 720p/1080i tv for now. Will be upgrading to new tv or monitor in a year or so.

Mother board??? I have no idea on this or the type or amount of fans/coolers I will need.

Ram? 8gb or 16mb?

I will get 1tb hard drive but do I need a ssd? And how big?

Think that is it for now. It is a build for these specific games but will probably use other games in the future. This build is an Xbox one replacement. I won't be including keyboard or mouse in this and i wont need wifi. Thank you in advance.

I5K, 8Gb ram (but meh, get 16Gb for future, 1070), ssd or long loading times and slightly worse on the fly texture loading, 256GB is a good size.

You simply must get an overclockable intel cpu, arma loves this. You don't need many cores, it is single thread really.

Thanks for the reply. Is it difficult to overclock my system? And will I have to add/change my fans/cooling system. Remember I have a budget. Also, if I am to overclock it will the I6600k be fine or should I be looking at the I7600k. Not sure on the price difference.

i5 k-series is optimal for ARMA 3/DayZ.
Going to i7 at the same clock-speed is the difference in 2-3fps really.

Ultimately you'll see a good performance increase from the stock 4GHz to 4.5GHz for example. It's been a while but easily 5-10fps from that.

SSD for sure for ARMA, will further eliminate chances of lag spikes.

The fastest single core you can get will reap the most rewards.

Arma loves clock :D

If not planning to overclock and is primarily for Arma, I would even consider an i3 6100. Obviously, mileage may vary in any multi-threaded programs.

Thanks for the replies and info. Think you've pointed me in the right direction. Looking like I can get an i5 6600k overclocked with a gtx 1070 gpu. May have to compromise on ram but can always add at a later date. Will defiantly invest in ssd. Waiting for a friend to advise on cooling but think I'm leaning towards some kind of water cooler system because of the overclocking? What's everyone's thoughts on this?

looks like the 7600k is cheaper (at least on this website). probably go for that since its faster out of the box and will overclock more and arma/dayz needs high speed cores.

So having taking note of all your excellent advice my friend and I have come up with this build. (Mainly my friend). I'm interested to know what you all think about it and will it be enough to run most games well, but specifically arma 3 and dayz.
I5 7600k (going to overclock to around 4.4GHz)
Asus prime Z270-K motherboard.
16GB corsair vengeance DDR4 2133MHz.
6GB evga gtx 1060 SC ACX 2.0.
250GB Samsung 750 evo SSD
1TB WD blue WD10 7200rpm
Artic Cooling freezer 11i.

May well upgrade the gpu to a 1070 in a year or two if this build will support it? Also not 100% on the fan. Will it be enough for the overclocked cpu? The build is going to be around £1100. Defiantly don't want to go any higher than that.

It's okay but the 1060 will let it down for the price difference your mate will wish he went for the 1070, I'ld rather have a 1070 and no HDD right now for example.

Faster ram would be nice (A3 does like faster ram) there might be a deal on for the same price as the 2133 but faster?

Go with an air cooler that has a 120mm fan, not a 92mm.

Thank you for reply. And I understand the 1060 v 1070 performance gap but for now I will be playing these games through an 11 year old 1080i tv. Think the 1070 maybe overkill. As I am trying to keep the cost down to my budget, I can always upgrade when I get a new tv/monitor. Not sure I'm going for the overclock but like the idea of it, I'm not a massive gamer, maybe only playing 10 hours over the week so don't know how much it will affect my pc?

It doesnt matter. The cheapest 1070 is £390, the cheapest 6Gb 1060 is £230, trust me for an extra £160 you want the 1070.

When you are playing, the overclock will net you many more fps, sure your monitor will only do 60 flashes per second but when arma gets busy and a lot is going on you want you minimum fps as high as possible.

Are people in here legit recommending a 1070 for Arma 3.. Give over. a 1060 will be absolutely fine, overkill even.. Arma 3 uses mainly cpu power.

( ive spend thousands of hours playing the arma series and i promise you, you do not need a op gpu )

I'm not saying he *needs* a 1070 for arma, I'm saying it would be a waste to not get a better GPU while he is buying new right now.

There is more to a computers life than the oddity that is arma.

If he goes for a 1060 now he is gimping himself in the future. If he wants to do cheap all he needs is a second hand 290.

I appreciate that the difference between the 1060 and 1070 is considerable for not a lot more but that price really is at the very limits of my budget. For now, as long as the 1060 will comfortably run arma and dayz etc... then that will keep me busy for a year or so. In the future I will upgrade my tv/monitor along with the gpu as long as it's just a case of replacing the 1060 with a 1070. We are about to buy a house so my loving other half has only allowed me this purchase if I can fund it myself away from other commitments!!!! Hence, I'm selling consoles, golf clubs etc... what I really want to know is if the cpu is adequate enough not to bottleneck a 1070 or even a 1080?

Also looks like I should be overclocking. Just a little worried on the impact this will have on my system? I believe we have a copy of windows 10. I appreciate that arma3 is a bad example of running a game with good fps but I'm just after a system that will give me the best chance to achieve good fps results without breaking the bank. I would hope that a 1060 gpu would've good enough to run most other games at a good standard. Another game I will looking at on release will be star citizen so will probably need to upgrade to get the best out of that.

Yeah if your only running at 720p and playing arma based games then dont go nuts on the GPU, just grab a K series i5 and overclock the nuts off it then you probably wont have to change that for years.

When you upgrade you monitor to a higher res then maybe upgrade your GPU to suit what ever res you choose.
