I made a thread not long ago, I'm going to order the parts within the next few days so i want to see what i should change with it. I've never overclocked so would anyone suggest me getting a pre-overclocked bundle? or just overclock it myself by researching?

Atm I'm thinking if i get a pre-overclocked set:
Krypton Z68 600i Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz @ 4.60GHz Overclocked Bundle
- with the 8gb option, looking at the motherboard options there doesn't seem to be any major difference - could anyone explain to me why the other boards are more expensive?

The build will be mostly for gaming, video editing (HD) and other design aspects. The main problem for me is I have trouble working out what power supply i should use, if i use the overclocked bundle along with the 6870 what would i need?

I have a budget of around £800 as I'm buying a new monitor outside of the budget. I'm already sorted for peripherals, hard drives and OS. I was tempted to go for the 2600k but i can't justify the extra £100 for a little, if any, increase in performance. As for the case, many have recommended the Xigmatek (sp?) White Knight, but i don't know much about it and even though its supposed to be solid the low price puts me off.

If someone could piece the best possible build for what i need, it would be appreciated. Going slightly over budget isn't a worry either, just nothing over the top :).

following has the 2600K, 6870, decent mobo and psu, gelid cpu cooler, only really need the 2600K if you do a fair bit of video editing etc, if its only now and again i don't think it would be worth it.

new sandybridge's are pretty easy to clock so have a go yourself plenty of help around here.

I'll be editing a fair bit so it may be worth getting the 2600k i suppose.. Is that power supply definitely sufficient? With around £100 left on the budget from that build, what would you suggest to improve there using the extra cash?

Thanks for the help :)

here is the comparison between the i5 2500k and i7 2600k.
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=287
as you can see it will make a hell of a difference in your video editing and design work, but it wont make any difference in the gaming.

also, its worth checking if your video editing and design software can make use of cuda cores on nvidia cards, because i know for sure video editing and encoding is sped up massively by cuda cores

graphics card is a lot faster than the 6870: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/290?vs=330
(although, you;d hope it would be since its a lot more expensive)

if you want extra graphics power further down the line, all you have to do is slot another 560Ti in and you've got an instant ~90% FPS boost

*edit*
just noticed you said you have hard drives, are they SATA hard drives?

Yeah, they're SATA. Currently have 2x 1tb Samsung F3 and 1x 2tb Samsung F4. Seems like solid spec, and the graphics card looks a decent enough boost for the extra £30 so not a bad shout. I may buy a smaller HDD for the OS, although i was tempted to go for an SSD but i think it'll be more worth it to wait a little longer for prices to drop further. Would you say that's a good case for the build? it looks pretty nice tbf.

Cheers

Thanks for the help :)

well you could add the 560ti reaper mentions into my build which should take it to about 730 ish then maybe add a crucial m4 64gb ssd drive ?

Sorry about the late reply, been incredibly busy :(

I think I'm going for the 2500k as it fits my budget slightly better - I've decided to go for a better monitor rather than the slight improvement in performance.

Does someone know of a great monitor that's about 24", LED and has HDMI? Price range around £150-175.

Since its my first overclocked build I want to be careful when doing so but would still like to hit around 4.5ghz with the 2500k, what kind of cooling and how big a PSU would be sufficient? Considering I'm going for this GPU and the 8gb Kingston RAM:

Thanks again :)

EDIT: I'm thinking of waiting a little while for the SSD, I'll most likely get a WD Blue or something in the meantime.

if your not thinking of sli'ing the card then 600w will be fine, sli'ing then look at something around 750w.

cooler wise have a look at the Gelid Tranquillo.

if its a going to be used as a boot drive have a look at the wd black or samsung f3.

I've seen the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus mentioned here a few times and it's basically the same price as the Tranquillo, which one is better for overclocking?

Yeah it will be used as the boot drive, which of these would be the best? They have similar specs and i don't understand the whole difference between them in performance - except from the larger cache:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-354-WD

they'll be pretty similar, and the Hyper 212 is a decent cooler.

the wd black are designed as there quicker drives, blues iirc are more used for data storage.
