New Build Home Network

I've used a lot of Excel, and have no reason to doubt that CCS is equally as good; I do intend to try them when I have the opportunity.

They're both fine for commercial type installs. For domestic I'd prefer something that blends in. All of my mains faceplates are MK Logic Plus and I chose the same for the network outlets. The cost was higher, and the quality no better, but everything does match.

Not the same stuff, but I rate Excel equally as highly.

Ahh okay only reference I could find for CCS was Excel.

OP, screwfix do some drywall back boxes that are decent and reasonably priced. If you do a top drop then you want a deeper back box with cat6 as it can be a pain.

Thanks again, lots to consider! The builder is dragging their feet at the moment so I have another couple of weeks yet I think until I have the discussion about requirements with them. CCS and Excel I'll ask about if can get them to spec it.

Another vote on excel stuff from mayflex, must have fitted well over 1000 points and the only issues i can think of are from people ramming the sockets with their chairs

OK guys, to bump this I've got a price back from the builders finally of £2340 for 16 ports. I've not got a complete breakdown yet of how that's been quoted and what spec it includes.

I've got no real perspective on if that's steep or not, but at that price I'm thinking of dropping to 5e and seeing how much the price drops by.

Any opinions on whether that's reasonable or ride-taking territory?

you know the difference between cat5e and cat6 is only a couple of quid per reel.

Is that the price to put network cabling in a building that isn't completed yet, or is it for installing it in an existing, decorated one and making good afterwards?

If it's being done as the house is going up then it is incredibly steep - however you're sort of screwed because the chances of you being allowed to go into your own house with contractors that aren't appointed by the house builder are slim to none.

Yeah this is the problem, it's a new build that is going up at the moment, I thought it seemed high, was expecting around a grand less than that. Hit the nail on the head, they won't let me assign my own contractors. I actually think they don't want to do it so have built a large amount on top to dissuade me or make it really worth their while to do.

I'll tell them it seems ridiculous, and I've already asked for an explanation of the price, not sure what I can do though other than not having it or paying the price. But I'll do my best to bring it down before giving in either way.

Some of them do the same thing with house alarms as well. Except they run all the alarm cabling around the house to all the corners where you'd usually put PIR sensors, run them back to a central location for a control panel, run cabling to an alarm box location, and then if you don't take them up on their inflated offer of a burglar alarm they chop them all off and poke them back inside the walls before the final decorating.

House builders are the lowest form of construction.

Oddly everything else about them is either standard or actually reasonably priced. Alarm, turf, fencing, shower, lighting etc and all the usual stuff that's either a pain, not included, or expensive is in all their builds as standard for everyone. I just think that this might be a big ask of them that they see as a risk so they've inflated the price some more.

Without knowing the size of the house, how many ports you want in each room, whether you want a single ethernet connection behind a floating wall TV etc you can estimate how much material costs. But the figure they've given is extortionate imo.

305m CAT6 is more than sufficient £94.38
305m CAT5e would have been £60.36
4X Double Dry wall flush back boxes £1.68 each
4X Double Faceplates with 4 modules £9.93 each
4X Single Dry wall flush back boxes £1.26 each
4X Single Faceplates with 2 modules £5.17 each
1X Double Width Entry/Exit Faceplate - £2.50

That's around £170 in materials and these are just retail prices also from netstore direct. You also will need a Patch panel, 24X patch leads, 24 port switch, labelling, and a cabinet to house them in. Make sure there is a power point there for all your equipment.

If it's a build that is currently under development then it should be simple for them to chase the cabling. Over 2k is a joke.

Thanks for that breakdown. I've challenged the quote and will see what they say. Also asked for a price for conduit to the locations now instead.

To be honest if there's no budging I might just end up doing a skirting board job after moving in, it might end up more of a fight than it is worth with the builder at this rate.
