how does this sound,im using this system to hopefully run flight simulator fsx projected onto a wall to and using a screen either side to display the cockpit panels.Im using this to train air cadets and my budget is around 1500-1600

any help would be great

After reading this, I'm thinking 2x GTX 285 may be unnecessary. You would probably be perfectly fine with a GTS 250 or GTX 260 ( I believe Nvidia cards do better in FSX).

Out of interest, what resolution is the projector?

One think FSX certainly likes is CPU power. As well as going for an i7 I would suggest overclocking, to get the most out of it. The Coolermaster v8 cools reasonably well, but for the price I would suggest going for this (and a decent fan), as it will cost about the same and cools much better. With this cooler I would be aiming for an overclock to 4GHz.

If you don't want to overclock it yourself- you can get a pre-overclocked 4GHz bundle from OCUK.

As for the PSU, 1000W is more than enough for a 4GHz i7, GTX285 SLI rig. Personally, I would save your cash, get one of GPUs I suggest above and get this PSU.

If you are getting a budget sound card, I would strongly suggest getting the Xonar DS over the X-Fi Audio. The Audio isn;t really an X-Fi, its just an old audigy running X-Fi software, the above Xonar is far superior.

What joystick/pedals are you planning to use?

hi thanks for your reply.
I needed two graphics card becuase i will be running ouput to four different displays simulateonsly.
I was planning on overclocking thanks for the shout abou the pre-overclokcer bundles i hadnt noticed them earlier.
Could you recommend a decent sound card as i didnt realise the one i picke was such low budget.

just found out will be using

2 x Acer X1261 Res: 1024 x 768 XGA

and a Saitek pro flight yoke system for the controls.

Would it be possible to have overclockers build this specifially for me with the components i request as its not just for me to be utilising. As looking at the per build systems on overclockers i cant find the system i want specifically

Ah, the dual graphics cards make sense now - though I would suggest dropping the GTX 285s down to two GTX 260s, the extra graphical power would have gone unused.

As for sound card - the Xonar DS is a pretty nice card for the money. If you want to get anything better I would suggest spending more on the speakers too - as the extra quality of the sound card really needs quality speakers to shine through.

The projectors are reasonably low-res, so that won't put a lot of strain on the graphics cards - again reinforcing that you won't need 2 x £250+ cards.

As for Overclockers building you a custom system, I'm sure they can sort you out:

would i still be able to run the graphics on full whack whilst using the 260.Im probably be using at least 21" monitors for the other 2 displays. Will it cause any problems runing the monitors ina different resoultuion to what i am going to be projecting in.
any good speakers to recommedn whilst your around

thanks a lot for your help :)

Aye, using the 260 will not limit you at all - it is really the CPU that limits this "game". However, as you are going to be using one of the fastest consumer CPUs, then you are maximising your performance as much as possible.

From what I have read, running other monitors of different resolutions won't be a problem.

As for speakers, I usually recommend Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1, or Logitech Z-5500 5.1 speakers. However, these recommendations are usually for home theatre or music applications. If its just for FSX, then this level of fidelity might not be needed. In this case the Xonar DS and X-540 speakers will do great. If you really want to raise the roof, get the Logitech Z-5500 speakers, turn up the bass and you will feel like you are in a plane :)
