Just put together a new PC and I'm using the stock CPU cooler for the time being. The motherboard is an Asus P8Z68V Pro and I installed the AI Suite II system software to monitor the board.

I've noticed while in the BIOS the CPU is reported at about 65-70C. I thought something was wrong and checked the HSF but it is seated fine. In Windows the AI Suite II reports the CPU temperature at about 33-35C, but when all Cores are being heavily used, and the Auto Tuning is on so it boosts the CPU to 4.4Ghz, the temp is temporarily reported at 90+C, but when the task is over it immediately goes down to the 40's and back to 33C within seconds. The CPU fan speeds up to about 2000RPM too.

So, is this normal and is the stock HSF ok for short blasts at 4.4Ghz or should I be getting an after-market one?

Temperatures in the BIOS will always be higher as none of the energy saving features are enabled so the CPU is always at full speed.

The stock heatsink isn't really suitable for a 4.4GHz overclock.

Temperatures go back down when you've finished running your task as the CPU clocks down to 1.6GHz at idle, and to a very low CPU usage, reducing the temperature considerably.

Over 90°C is too high. Most would recommend keeping it below 80 and the closer to 70 the better.

I suggest a better cooler.

As above - the Gelid Tranquillo is a great cooler for £26 and will be more than adequate at keeping temps chilly @ ~4.4Ghz.

BIOS temps are horribly inaccurate sometimes, try using realtemp to see what temperatures that reports. You can get it here

My housemate just built a new PC and his BIOS temp reported 50 degrees Idle, but it was actually 32 degrees etc.

If are planning on overclocking then +1 to the recommendations here, the stock sink is garbage for increases in voltages! I'd also recommend the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ as it's pretty cheap and does an excellent job cooling sandy bridge
