Evening all,

Spent most of the afternoon assembling my new rig, it comprises of the i5 750 @ 4.00ghz bundle from OC with the akasa Venom cooler in a CM 690 II case with no additional fans bar what is in the case. Other components are a 5850 and 5 sata hd's ran from a OCZ 600w psu.

fresh install of windows 764 bit all drivers on etc then decided to check health monitor in bios - 75 degrees C - alarmed i install Core Temp -

These seem very high still, should I be alarmed or is it purely due to the overclock? I have not ran a overclocked rig before so was unsure what to expect.

Cheers,

Rob

Is very high even for idle in the hot wether, my i7 as typing this is 43c and im in small office with the window shut. Did you seat the cooler or did come installed. More then likley need to be seated again

I seated it following the guide pinned at the top of the general section re the grain of rice of arctic cooler technique.

It is clamped down as tight as the cooler can go on it mind

Might be the problem to tight is not good. What tim are you using sometimes you need more depending how the TIM spreads other time you will need to let it cure

the thermal paste was arctic silver 5, i used about a grain of rice worth as per the guide i read on here, in the middle of the CPU. I tightened the cooler until the screws would not turn any more, is this not correct?

I am tempted to turn it off, take the cooler off and reapply some more arctic silver then put it back on and not so tight, what do you think?

Sounds like you did fine mate. AS5 can take 200 hours to cure, even so temps are only going to drop 2-3 when that happens. What vcore are you running? Check with CPu Z or bios?

from CpuZ, core voltage 1.416v - the thing is it is an OcUK bundle, the i5 750 @ 4.00 Ghz, and ive not touched any settings at all as it removes the warranty on the bundle I believe.

:( Was really looking forward to trying BC2 out on this rig tonight, but it got to 99 degrees C just patching the game, so im sure as hell not going ot run it :(

Can i buy ArctiClean or high quality isopropyl alcohol in any high street shops? I do not want ot wait a few days for something to be delivered mail order if I can go out and buy it somewhere.

Thanks for your help so far mate

That will be why mate....that fairly high. You ar right messing in the bios tends to get on RJ's nerves after hes built them ;)
With the volume they shift they will use settings like a template.

If it was me i would pop into the bios WRITE down the exact vcore then drop it down 2 nonches, touch nothing else....if it boots try some games ans see how you go :)

ah im pretty tired now been a long (dissapointing) day, so think i will give them a ring on my lunch tomorrow and see what they say as im not overly confident in fiddling in bios'es, i have found a shop nearby that sells Akasa TIm clean so i can pick a bottle of that up if needs be.

Cheers for your help tonight :)

thats very hot for a i5 750 i was running mine @ 4ghz and idle was about 41 & max load was 58 but that was using Corsair H50 i wonder what it would have been on air?

If you have a spare £66 i would recommend one its keeping i7 cool in this heat at the mo. but like you said give them a ring see what they say.

Max temp or Tcase as intel call it is 72 degrees which i think is about 85-90 on all the cores so its not a good idea to be running it that close to the limit post back with what they recommend.

Spoke to OC this morning who think it's because i have the cooler mounted horizontally ducking air from bottom upwards, directly above the gfx card. Pretty stupid on my behalf I must admit. They said to just take heatsink off and rotate through 90 anticlockwise, however when I asked if I needed to clean the chip he said it would be fine to just put a little more termal paste on instead, is this not wrong? It's only been on a day so will it be okay to do this?

Okay an update, took cooler off and their was a medium sized blob in a rough square but it did not look like it all had a solid seal with the cooler as the cooler bottoms have heat pipes etc so i turned the heatsink around 90* so it is now on the right side facing the front of the case pushing air into the cooler.

Power up and let it settle for a few minutes, temps sitting at roughly 45*.
Load up battlefield bad company 2 and after approx 20 minutes and the CPU at roughly 50% load the temps are averaging between 65 and 70 with the odd blip into 80~82.

So i decide to try Prime95, blend mode 4 tests simultaneously, all cores at 100% and within 10 seconds its hitting 99*C across all 4 cores so I stop the test immediately.

This is with the OCuK default vcore at 1.40625 still, as ive not been told ot touch that by them yet. Surely this is not correct at all? Any ideas?

Your right in what your thinking that 99 degrees c on the cores is not healthy i think you might have to get back in touch and tell them the situation hopefully they will retest there OC and Components it might just be a poor chip that need more volts to be stable i have a 920 D0 thats not great but im currently running @3.8 the max i have seen and only on one core is 75c and the i5's runs cooler too so on air @ 4ghz max i wud be ok with would be low 80's

Id be happy with your temps :( really regret not paying the £26 more and getting the H50 with the bundle now, as well as the prospect of having to disasemble the whole things and pack it off again :(

you'd be happy with core temps of a 99 degrees c shortly after starting prime!!!!

Whats wrong with the H50 if its set up correctly they work fine i have mine as a intake on my pc which i no goes against the grain but it works!im also using a gentle typhoon and the standard fan push/pull set up with AS5 Thermal compound and im not seeing temps above 75, and that was the other when the ambient was around 27/28 & encoding a bluray.

Sorry I meant I'd be happy with the 75c you mentioned and i wish i had got the H50 instead of the stocka Akasa Viper the bundle came with.

Called OC this morning, still think it's a mounting issue so I'm going to take cooler off again, clean all TIM and reapply then lower the vcore slightly and re prime95 it and see what happens but I'm guessing I will be back on the phone :(
