hi all, lloking for direction…*spent a frustrating weekend with my new build…

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply
Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)
Akasa AK-TT12-80 Thermal Adhesive Tape
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.00GHz (Socket AM2)
sus Arctic Square CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)
Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache
NZXT Lexa Classic Series Ultra light Aluminum Midtower

after solving issues concerning psu (faulty connector, replaced with new 600w psu) then getting the bios to recognise the ram timings (long time to figure that one out) but now im stuck with a cpu problem, it's overheating, in the bios its reading aas 70ºC in pc probe itsw reading 50-60, then underload it goes up to 100 and shuts down…

ive attempted to undervolt it 1.375, and that brings the temps downa bit… but it still running far too hot…*now ive used thermal tape as opposed to grease, im wondering if this is the issue… spent a whole day trowling the internet, and struggling to find a solution…

using vista =, and updated bios to 1102…

hope you guys out there could suggest anything…

cheers

jamie

Well...it has to be done sadly :)

When / if you remove the heatsink, check the tape you have put on, make sure theres still enough there.

Another thing i would check is to see if the fan on the heatsink is definetly working...I'm presuming it is but still worth a look.

May as well, But I'm presuming you are using the correct mounting system for the cpu cooler as well? i.e the AM2 one :)

rubbish… ok, i will have another attempt at unfusing the beggar… not the most fun whatsoever… but i will have another go… i believe it could be the thermal adhesive, its compressed on realy well*and there was great coverage, its just the HS doesnt seem to get very warm (al be it, its a massive cooler)

thanks!!

my fingers are bleeding…

Warm the 'tape' before trying to remove the heatsink. Just after it has reached 100ºC might be a good time. :)

thanks ns, it was a stubborn b-atch before, and couldnt find any helpful tips on the interweb, will give that a try this evening, and its not too hard to get it to 100ºC just a quick round on a game seems to cook it nicely… im going to try the supplied grease i got with the HS this time…

Just leaving the system on for a few minutes should be enough to warm the paste up really in all fairness...Unless the tape is THAT sticky :P

thanks guys… thers a lot to be said for a tile scraper, a hair dryer, and patience, removed the old gunk, slapped in some grease, and bobs your best mates uncles dad's lover, xp up n running 30 minutes later… and bios reading a much more agreeable 30ºC

top job

cheers

maybe i'll get to play a game tonight!

;)
