Hi all and in advance thanks for any help.

I recently bought a Q6600 + Ballistic DDR2 Ram + Pk5 Premium Mobo all from overclockers to replace my old mobo/cpu.

Everything was going well for a few days, I put it all together no problems, booted up and was playing cs and browsing the web no problem.

Then on sunday I went downstairs to get a drink, came back up and my comp had turned itself off and now wont turn itself back on again!

I have been pulling my hair out trying to get her back to life but have had no luck. I understand that it could be any number of things and the best thing to do would let an expert have a look at it but I have tried a couple of things,

  • New wall plug
  • Different Power Lead
  • Check if the on switch works on the case
  • Remove all PCI cards
  • Take mobo out of case and attempt to start it out of the case
  • Remove the RAM/CPU from mobo and attemp to start it

The mobo does have its green led light on when connected to the power supply and also the feature where a red led comes on when a pci card is incorrectly installed still works, but it just won't start.

When the on button is pressed the power supply make a tiny 'zzz' noise and the fan on it moves a fraction, but nothing else.

I tested if the power supply would start manually by jumping the green cable with a black one on the main power supply plug, this resulted in the power supply starting. This makes me think its a mobo problem, which is annoying as its my new one :(.

What are my options here? What shall i do, get system checked out by a pro? Return the mobo? What else could i try myself?

Thanks for any hints

Matt

I could try some other ram, don't have any at the minute. But surely the mobo would start minus ram and CPU as long as the psu was plugged into it and the switch was pressed?

May be wrong but maybe psu is on last legs?

Try another psu - one that you know works .

What psu are you using ? is it up to the job?

I have a seasonic 600W psu which i thought would definetly be up to the job, had it for about 2 years now and haven't had any problems yet, I will test it using a different mobo and see if it can start that one.

Have now connected my old motherboard back to my PSU and this starts it fine. Therefore I am thinking that it was an issue with my mobo/cpu/ram. Most likely the mobo as surely that must start without the ram/cpu in it, which it doesn't. Any suggestions?

You get the beeps if the ram isnt inproperly or if its wrong ram..

Same with your gfx so that isnt an issue either.

CPU Power from PSU plugged in?

Ok, I don't get any POST beeps from my new mobo, PSU won't even start with it.

The CPU does power when my old mobo is connected, I don't think it does with my new one, nothings happens. Its seems like the psu wants to start when connected to the new mobo and the on switch is pressed but it stops before it can get going.

Sounds like rma for board to me.

You have tried ram that you know is ok in the board? In one slot only - check each slot ?

Sent board back on RMA and Overclockers got back to me really quickly, and have sent out a new board. So guess it was the board and can't hopefully put it all back together and will be running as well as it initially was.

Bit worried it will happen again, shouldn't though must have just been a dodgy board(fingers crossed)

Thanks for advice
