Time to upgrade again. Already bought a Be Quiet Pure Base 500 case. Complete build I have in mind;

Capture.jpg

Already have the 2TB 2.5" SSD as main drive in current system. Planning to use this as data/storage once I get new M.2 drive. Also already have a decent 750W PSU, so not sure if it's worth getting a new 850W at this point.

Will be used for gaming, although not a massive gamer. Looking for decent performance. Obviously not looking to set the World on fire! Also use machine for music, video editing, Photoshop etc. Any thoughts, changes, suggestions? Cheers ;-)

Hi.

Your 750w psu is more than enough if its a decent unit and mite be able to save money with a b660 motherboard .

Most cpu coolers need a skt 1700 bracket to mount on the motherboard check yours come with one.

Thanks for the reply. PSU is a Gigabyte P750GM 80+ Gold. So hopefully that should do it. I did check power consumption and the estimate came it quite a bit below. I did find a few cheaper boards that were B660 chipset. But they were not that much cheaper. I like the one I picked as it's got shed loads of USB connections on the back plate. And I need that for all my music gear that's USB. I'm currently using a PCIEx1 USB expansion card in current build. Be good to do away with that ........ not much with the board I picked as it has not PCIEx1 slots! :-) I also checked the heatsink/cooler. There's only a few that are currently listed as socket 1700 ready out of the box. The Hyper 212 was one of them, so hopefully this is actually the case. I did find more AIO coolers that are 1700 ready, apparently. But not that fussed about going with one of these. I don't tend to mess around with overclocking too much to be honest.

Some of the Gigabyte psu had a recall as they were exploding I would definately check that out .

The 12400 comes with a stock cooler so if you can live with it or a while you can get which cooler you like.

Arctic e 34 sport is also ptett6 decent and they do white if your after that.

If you actually do a lot of video editing and other tasks then you would benefit from more ram. You may want to think about getting 2x16gb sticks instead, ram is currently reasonably priced in the UK so hopefully it is not a massive increase for you in Aus if you did this.

I heard something about exploding Gigabyte PSU's on a YouTube video I was watching! But of a worry. I've had this one a few months now in my current build. I did have a 550W Be Quiet PSU before ....... but that corked it! One day grey smoke just started coming out the back of the PC! :-) I thought the whole thing was fried. Luckily just the PSU had given up. Hope the same doesn't happen with the new Gigabyte!! :-/

I thought Intel stopped including coolers with their CPU's. I don't remember my last one having a cooler. Maybe I'm mistaken. Anyway, could be an option. But I'd prefer a decent third party cooler ...... if it fits without any faffing about. Cooler Master web page states it's 1700 ready. So should be right I think;

I was thinking about this actually. It is pretty cheap. May as well go for 2x16GB or maybe 4x8GB. I noticed that some coolers and fans sit bloody close to that 4th stick of RAM. So I might suss out how how the cooler sits on the board in relation to the RAM slots and go from there. I've only ever used two sticks of RAM in a build, even if there's been 4 slots available. What's the difference with going with x4 RAM sticks over x2?

With a DDR4 Alderlake system and 3200mhz ram I am sure you could easily run 4x8gb sticks and would be no different to 2x16gb. If you were on DDR5 with sticks over 6000mhz then there are major issues trying to use all 4 slots but thats not your situation. If you are buying from new you should get 2x16gb unless there is a significant difference in cost over 4x8gb or you want to fill all the slots to achieve a certain look.Having 2x16 also gives you the option of going for another 2x16 in the future, unlikely but is easier upgrade if needed.

G'day cobber,

Avoid DDR5 - too expensive for little real world gain IMHO. Stick with DDR4.
yes go for 32GB of RAM

Your PSU is more than adequate. Most people overspec their PSU. That comes from 'back in the day' where we used to plan for a 20% overhead to keep in the PSU's best efficiency range. PSUs have come a long way since then and that advice - while still common - doesn't apply any longer.

If you haven't bought into the Intel system yet (i.e. haven't bought mobo or cpu) consider AMD - IMHO it is the best value for money at the moment. Certainly when I was pricing a system build here in 'straya anyway.

I'm in Brissie mate - you?

The P750GM is the psu that gamernexus looked into which has a tendency to explode. I wouldn't put it in my pc. No way I would risk my other components

Newcastle.

Yep, DDR4 for now. DDR5 doesn't seem worth it at the moment. I'll go for 32GB's of 3200Mhz RAM I think ;)

I looked into AMD. My first ever build, many moons ago, was an AMD system. Next was Intel and I've built Intel systems since. Always consider AMD though. But I'm not sure comparable CPU's are such good value as they used to be. Not with the new Alder Lake Intel CPU's it seems.

Newcastle, NSW. But originally from UK.

Well, ****!! :eek: That's a concern. Erm. Might also get an 850W Corsair ;)

They did isolate the particulat SKUs that were from a very bad batch. It is worth checking that your psu is not in that bad bunch. It has been mentioned on here before and an OCUK staff member has said they have used those Gigabyte psu in hundreds of builds with no unusual levels of failure.

I agree it is a point of concern and I would not want to be using one but if you have been using it for months then it is most likely not one of the faulty bunch that ended up in the US.
