new build network setup?

Hi All,
We are building a new house and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a good network build?
I am running 2 cat6 cable to all bedrooms, office, living space, lounge and 4 going to the attic room where we will have playstations and cinema/projector but was wondering the best way to get it set up in the office?

there will be 18 cat6 cables all terminating there but unsure of best way to finish them and then connect them all to the router?

Put RJ45 plug on end of each cable, plug cables into 24 port switch and then run one cable from switch to router.

Yes, it’s called a network cabinet and the first row of your cabinet is the patch panel that all your network connections terminate into.

Fair enough you’ve got 2 x CAT6 going to each room (don’t you watch TV in the kitchen?) but why? You’re far better off writing down all the things you might want connected to your network. Cabling is ALWAYS better than WiFi, so anything you can get into a cable, get it on a cable. Then add a couple of spares for randomly wanting to plug in a laptop or something.

And have you allowed for ceiling mounted wireless access points? Another option is wall mounted access points but you still want a cabled point in the ceiling of every major room. Seriously, you’ll thank yourself later.

The company I work with resell Sonos and we subcontract for Linn installers so think about where you might want your surround sound speakers. Run mains and a CAT6 to each location so you can corner or wall mount your speakers. Again, a much better solution than trailing cables on stands.

And you probably want to allow for at least one surveillance camera on every wall and another one by the front door, and don’t forget to run CAT6 to your front doorbell.

Typically, on a 4/5 bed house we fully terminate a 48-port patch panel. Any spare cable opportunities get run to the office and behind TVs.

Finally, if you know where your internet will come into the building, either have it right next to the patch panel or run another CAT6 from the ONT to the patch panel.

Before the house is up and first fix is completed you have the perfect opportunity to get everything sorted, so take it. It might look like a big on-cost but I promise you, it’s buttons compared to opening and making good the walls, ceilings and flooring afterwards.
