new build, no signal to monitor

I'm hoping people can help me out here. I've put together my new computer and it turns on, all fans spin but nothing appears on the screen at all. I am looking for advice on how to troubleshoot this.

My system:
Mobo: ASUS M4A78LT-M LE
CPU: Athlon II x3 450
RAM: 4GB (2x2) 1333MHz Generic
PSU: Corsair 430W CX
GFX: Onboard (Planning to get a gfx card soon, assuming i can get the comp to work first!)

The screen works fine on the old computer we have. For the new build I turned the screen off and on and it says its receiving no signal. I've plugged the case speaker into the motherboard (hopefully the right way) and get no beeps at all upon startup. What components could be to blame here?

Hello and welcome to the forums :)

Double check all power connections including 4 or 8 pin for CPU power.

Try with only one memory module in different slots, then try the other one.

And try a CMOS reset.

Thanks :)

Ok so I checked the 4 pin power and its plugged in fine. Things get a bit weird when I checked the RAM though.

God I don't even know where to start....

1. 1 stick of RAM is bad I think because nothing appears on screen at all when I use it on its own.

2. The first time I booted up with the other stick of RAM the screen did work but when it checked the memory it said something like 1791MB OK. It's a 2GB stick so should it have said 2048MB OK?

3. After the mem check I got 1 beep, then 3 fast beeps and then got a message on the screen along the lines of:

Chassis Intruded!
Fatal Error....System Halted

Well this is just terrific so far.

4. I booted up again with the good RAM (in between I had tested the bad RAM) and this time there was no chassis intruded message, it just goes straight to a screen telling me to reboot and select a proper boot device (I have unplugged the ODD and HDD while trying to get the screen to work cos didnt like them powering up on their sides)

Summary of questions:
Is my 'good' RAM still dodgy?
Should I be worried about the chassis intruded message?
Should I go ahead and connect the drives and try to install windows?
Any other advice in general?

I definitely question the stability of the second module which allows you to boot.

Chassis intruded message I would worry for the time being, monitor and see what happens.

I would give it ago installing windows, once your up and running arrange RMA of your memory.

Thanks again for helping.

Alright, I'm on my laptop at the moment so I'm not in a rush to get my computer working. I went to install Windows but then remembered I could check RAM in the BIOS so I did and under system memory it says:

Installed Size: 2048MB
Usable Size: 1791MB

I just want to confirm that all of it should be usable right?

If so, then I have a dead stick and a faulty stick so I figure there isnt much point installing Windows until I get the new RAM since I'll be returning both sticks and wont be able to use the computer anyway. The chassis intruded problem hasnt come up again so hopefully that was just a one-off.

That'll teach me to skimp on RAM, I wasn't too sure when I placed the order to begin with but read a lot of forum posts (not on OCUK) saying that generic was fine if not overclocking so figured I'd just go for it.

As you are using onboard GFX i would say that the onboard GFX allocateing the missing ram for its use :)
About 256/7 MB seems about right for default GFX

Yes I am, I didn't realise it would change the reading in BIOS. Oh well, there was still the dead stick and they came as a kit so have to return both. Have already got an RMA for them. Thanks for pointing that out though.

Now to get some new RAM and maybe have a peak at the graphics cards...
