New build not powering on

Hi folks,

I've just put together a new PC and it's not powering on. No fans or beeps, it's dead as a duck.

I tested the PSU and it's working. Un-plugged and re-plugged all cables, re-seated RAM, still no signs of life.

I wonder if I've just made a mistake and not plugged in the power button cable properly? Does it look right? Isn't there a way of powering on a machine from the motherboard (to test)?

Your cables look fine, so far as I can see, though I rarely connect all the internal USB cables and what not so early in a build.

Make sure the PSUs power switch is in the ON position when installed in the case.

The polarity doesn't matter with the power cable, but I usually plug in only the power switch and the reset switch, since it is easier to see them. Did you refer to the manual and make sure the orientation of the front panel switch was consistent with the motherboard in your case? An easy mistake to make.

Did you test the PSU with a tester, or another PC? I assume all the power cables are from the PSU that you purchased?

What case have you got?

The front panel cables look to be in 2 connector blocks, i am used to single/double pin conectors.

There is a possibility that the pins are in the wrong order for the motherboard.

I did the thing with a paperclip in 2 of the cable sockets and saw the PSU fans spin. So there's power getting that far, at least.

I tried the trick with the screwdriver that Mcnumpty2323 suggested but nothing happened.

That's not necessarily reliable, but from what you've said, it sounds like you have a dead motherboard. There could be a short in the case, which you could rule out by building it outside.

Have you tried pulling all USB devices, the graphics card and the PCI-E device at the bottom? (assuming you don't have 7500F, since that has no graphics) Strange thing happen sometimes.

Paperclip trick only shows that
The psu isn't totally dead
It's not a guarantee of full functionality
Ie when load is required from the psu

Did you remove reset, hdd led etc
Just in case any of those were in wrong position
Before you bridged the pins?

Double check 24 pin
And 8 pin cpu connectors are fully clicked home
Have had a board before where pushing down
The 24 pin
Made the motherboard flex away
So it didn't fully insert

As tetras said
If none of that helps
Build it outside the pc case
To rule out any short

As the others have said, build outside of case.

Noticed on your pic of the RAM, the first stick is not locked in properly. (think you should still get signs of life though)

Good luck with the fault finding.

No luck. Tried outside the case, it's still deader than my 14th birthday party.

Very possible I made a mistake, but I would have thought I'll get POST beeps and fans even I've put something in wrong, as long as there's power to the MB?

Tried it with the same PSU and cable I had in my previous PC, still no life. Have contacted OCUK to ask about a return. Seems my gaming marathon will have to wait a little longer. Woe.
