New Build - Old Build Dead

Yeah DDR4 is the way to go for at least another year now, don't think it's worth it until the cost correctly reflects the increase in performance.
Its madness because its still first gen RAM. Also, good DDR4 is stupidly cheap.

Yes, you can buy a DDR5 build now but there will be a refreshed motherboard and RAM in the future that overclocks better than it and youd probably be due for an upgrade at that point anyway.

Im just hoovering up good DDR4 sets second hand at the moment.

I agree with JollyJamma, the MSI board best of the cheaper z690 boards. If you planning or using a more powerful cpu, then the Tomahawk next level up. It has better vrm's and runs cooler..that or the tuf board but that's more expensive. For Storage, I'd prob look at the crucial nvme's below. For gen 4 drives, they're well prices atm. The Z690 board can take 3 x gen4 nvme's and 1 x gen3 so plenty of options, whether going just for 1 x 2tb nvme or 2 x 1tb etc
Just remember if getting the 12600k to get oem version as sames £10 on the retail version(difference being the packaging)

IF my PSU is knackered or my GPU is knackered, what are my "best" options?

RM650/RM750(2021)/RM850(2021) depending on your GPU.
I'd probably just go for 750/850 if you plan to upgrade your GPU down the line, especially if it's going to be something beefy.

Very nice. Enjoy the massive upgrade.

RM750(i) is pretty good for a PSU and do you use a programme that makes use of Cuda cores?

I presume you want a platinum rated PSU though?

Don't use CUDA cores. Don't expect I will really. Probably :)
Then any graphics card will do really. WHat do you have at the moment? How much power do you need? Casual gaming on the side or do you just need a display output?

You could get anything from a GT710 entry level GPU to a 1050ti to a 3060 12gig depending on your needs. AMD 6600 isnt a bad option for a midrange card either.

Got a 1080 at the moment. I think my top budget would be 500ish IF I had to replace it.
Test the GPU when you get the new rig.

If it doesnt work, use the onboard and see if that works for you. If you need more grunt, a 3060 12gig or 3060ti would be a good replacement.

AMD option

Edit: just saw this on preorder and its a 3060ti at a good price

they have the 3060 version coming in also. Another well known store has them both in stock, but more expensive. Nice to see these priced more reasonably compared to a couple of months ago

GeordieStew Just remember that a 3060 Ti will use a lot less power than a 1080. If you are that worried about power draw, the 1080 would be the first thing to go.

Scratch that, seems to use about the same power draw.

Everything I'd ordered arrived today. Booted up first time. Guess gpu and psu are both ok. No idea what was bust with old mobo, cpu, ram. Maybe I'll investigate one day. Thank you all for the advice.

Probably a dead motherboard.
But how much faster is it?

enjoy the new build!!
