New build problem

Just built a new PC with Windows 7 64-bit and when I switch it on everyday I get the blue screen. I don't even get as far as the login.

It boots fine when I switch it off and back on again. It's just really annoying as apart from that I'm delighted with it.

Can anybody please help ?

My new build is as follows:

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
AMD PHENOM II X2 550
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P
Corsair DDR3 1333MHz 4GB
Antec Three Hundred Tower Case
Sony AD-7240S-0B
Corsair PSU/HX Series 450 Watt PSU
Sapphire RADEON HD 5750 1GB
Samsung SpinPoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB

Try reseting the CMOS and loading optimised defaults (or similar) and then manually set the voltages for the CPU and memory.

If that doesn't work run memtest from a bootable ISO for a few hours - and let us know how you get on.

Haven't tried resetting the CMOS or running memtest and PC booted straight into Windows 7 first time ! Weird or what ?

Not really. You appear to have an intermittent problem – which is consistent with a lot of known problems - not many of them serious.

It may be that:

  • One or some of your core components aren’t getting enough juice during the boot sequence so it’s ‘hit and miss’ whether or not your system boots
  • Your BIOS is corrupted
  • Faulty memory
  • Faulty PSU
  • Poorly fiited hardware or connector
  • Faulty cable
  • MB
  • the list goes on…

If it does start to ‘play up’ again I would try the CMOS reset, manually input core voltages, check all connections – and then memtest if required.

If above quick fix doesn’t eradicate the problem post back.

Good luck.
