New build problems with DDR2 and Windows...

So,

Everything seems ok so far with my new machine, but a couple of things have worried me. One is after using CPU-Z i noticed my 2GB of Geil 6400 DDR2 seems to be running 5300 rather than 6400 - is there something in my Gigabyte DS4's BIOS i need to tweak? I noticed on the RAM it says to set the voltage to 2.1v but i cannot find anywhere in my BIOS what it is at the moment and how i go about setting it to 2.1, i can only see where to add increments of volts? Heres my CPU screenshot:

The other problem i have is, when opening "User Accounts" in Control Panel i get "An error has occured in the script on this page. Access is denied. Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?". It looks like an IE script error box but i have no idea why its popping up, the only things i have installed so far are drivers and Windows updates!

Can anyone help?

yeah i'm pretty sure that as default on the gigabyte boards tend to default the ram voltage to 1.8v the geil needs 2.1v so just change this in bios and all should be fine :)

((266 * 2) * 8) = 4256MHz

with a ration of 5/4

(4256/4) * 5 = 5320MHz

Sounds about right.

I guess it only shows as a maxiumum bandwidth because that's what you have set the ratio to be.

I may stand corrected though.

To get it to recognise the 6400, I gues you may have to look at the BIOS updates as you suggest.

The default setting for the Geil on spd is 533Mhz for compatibility iirc. You say that you can see the voltage increment in the bios ie you know to press ctrl-f1 for advanced options. Hence Vmem must be bumped up by +0.3v, and the system memory multiplier set to manual and selected for 3x. ie 266x3=800Mhz

Thanks for your responses, guys.

I tried setting the System Multiplier to 3x (it said 800mhz underneath it, rather than 667), then set the voltage to +0.3 but a line was flashing saying:

****SYSTEM VOLTAGE NOT OPTIMIZED****

Or something along those lines. I then rebooted anyway, got into Windows and ran CPU-Z but it said the same thing - Geil 5300. ?

Also i didnt know about Ctrl+F1, i tried that but it didnt do much! I just used the Delete key to get into the BIOS and there is a "MB Intelligent Tweaker" menu...its a shame because there is nowhere in the BIOS that lists the current voltage, so i have no idea how much to increase it by!

Ok, i used the Gigabyte tool and have now set the following:

But unfortunately CPU-Z still says 5300. So little confused tbh

EDIT: Just noticed, it looks like the voltage has dropped from what i set it to (2.1v) back to 1.8v...whats going on?! That screenshot was taken after a reboot.

That was using the Gigabyte tool. Should i do it in the BIOS instead?

Any reason why CPU-Z is still showing 5300 like that...im so confused! :o

After setting the voltage in the BIOS (first thing i tried) it appeared to stick but CPU-Z still reports it running at 333mhz 5300. Can anyone help? Please!

have you tried manually setting the timings for the ram + cpu to their defaults?

In the BIOS? I did nothing other than set the System Multiplier to x3, and setting the RAM voltage increment to +0.3. For some reason after doing that in the BIOS a line would flash beneath the System Multiplier saying **** RAM VOLTAGE NOT OPTIMIZED **** or something along those lines...

Im really confused dude, i have never tweaked settings like this before so feel free to talk to me like a child your walking through a maze, i appreciate your help :)

haha ok i'm not really experienced with gigabyte mobo's but leave the system multiplier at auto or the stock for your chip, then make sure ram volts are at 2.1v, if you can manually input the stock timings of your ram do this also and try booting from there :) let me know how you get on

Rightio, back from work.

Have now set everything again in the BIOS, System Multiplier to x3 and DDR2 Voltage to +0.300v. Then checked with the Gigabyte software tool and it is reporting the same, so think that bit is ok.

Only weird thing is, why is CPU-Z still reporting:

Max Bandwidth: PC2-5300 (333MHz)

Does it just not support my mobo so is not reading it correctly?

Also, should my CPU Bus speed be 266MHz for a 6600 Conroe?

:)

From the memory tab:

Frequency: 400.0MHz (is that right? Half 800MHz?)
FSB: DRAM: 2:3
CAS# Latency: 5 clocks
RAS# to CAS# delay: 6 clocks
RAS# Precharge: 6 clocks
Cycle Time: 18 clocks...

So, thats not right is it - im sure this is supposed to be 4-4-4-12 as you mentioned and its 5-6-6-18...

Ok, there were lots of options in the BIOS for different timings so i set the ones i recognised to 4-4-4. Looking in CPU-Z everything reflects this so fine...going to go back in to check and see if i can find the Cycle Time (Tras) as this seems to be on 18 now in CPU-Z!

Good man, thats fine.

Should have clocked the CPU tho ;)

400x7 tis easy, 400x8 would be easy too.

Just set a 1:1 multiplyer on the mem and then set a FSB of 400, and a CPU voltage of 1.4V. Then a CPU multi of 8.

Thats if you can change the CPU multi on a DS3?
