Hello chaps, i have recently put together a new system of mine.

c2d 6600
asus p5n-e sli
8800gts
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB
2 older hard drives - 120gb hitachi IDE and 250gb maxtor sata 1
geil 2gb pc 6400c4 ultra low latency
Seasonic m12 600w

It all went together well, however upon booting and trying to install windows on the new drive i could not, it kept on telling me that it needed to install system files on the ide drive. To get around this quickly i just unplugged the ide drive.

So continuing with installation i'm using the standard nvidia sata/raid drivers from the asus cd. I can see both my sata drives and i install windows on a partition on the seagate. After installation has finished and the computer reboots into windows i am faced with a stop error code at the loading bar.

This is an 0x0000007b code, with a few reference codes following.

I had a look on microsoft knowledge base and it seems to be some kind of hard drive driver incompatibility.

This article has the exact same error codes as i get
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082/en-us

But doesn't seem to be relevant as i'm trying a fresh install on a new drive.

Can anyone please help me? I'm tearing my hair out.

Edit

After rebooting with only the new drive plugged in i get this error code
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297185/en-us

Which doesn't really apply at all. Seems like it is a prob with the new drive. I'll have to experiment somewhat.

If you can somehow get into Windows, be it, on one of the old IDE drives just so you can create a slipstreamed SP2 cd then I'd try that.

Everytime I do a fresh install I use the slipstream CD and it picks up my SATA drives fine, don't have to load any 3rd-party drivers etc for it to work.

Perhaps try doing that and then installing Windows from the new CD. :)

do you have jmicron disabled (its a raid controler)
i couldnt boot with it tbh... also check you have your sata cards set as ide

I finally traced this issue to an out of date SATA RAID driver loaded from the Gigabyte CD.

To clarify, I experienced the following symptoms:

Created RAID0 stripe and went through the initial Vista install, upon reboot I got the BSOD 0x0000007b.

I then tried the same exercise with a Windows XP install but this borked even sooner during the bluescreen installation phase.

All I had to do was download the most up to date SATA RAID driver from the Gigabyte website and install that during the Vista pre-install settings phase - worked like a charm - and you can now load drivers from USB sticks rather than having to dig out an old floppy and drive.

I should have known much better than to trust the CD that came with the motherboard and should have gone straight to the website. I would recommend generally that before anyone commences a build leading to a new OS install, that you acquire up to date suitable drivers rather than trying the baseline drivers and causing yourself a headache. Basically, chuck the bloody CD in the bin and download all of the apps and driver needed fresh.

Was really kicking myself cos though this was my first build in a long time, I used to work in the trade and this type of issue shouldn't have taken me three hours to figure out.
