New Build Problems

I'm a long time lurker in these forums but never had the need to post until now as I can't find an answer specific to the issues I've been having with my new build. I'm certainly no expert on these matters although this is my third build and the previous two went very smoothly thanks to the excellent build guide on here.

So here is my spec, all bought from OC:

BitFenix Shinboi Gaming Case
Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155
Asus P8P67 LE Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard **B3 Revision**
OcUK ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-E Graphics Card
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9)
OCZ ZS Series 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply

Plus a scattering of HDD's, DVD-RW etc...

The build seemed to go fine with no problems. However on the first boot it would not POST. On closer inspection I noticed the MemOK! led was constantly lit. Reading the motherboard manual I was informed that I needed to press the little button by the led to get the motherboard to find the RAM timings. I tried this and the PC rebooted followed by a slow flashing LED which then got faster then slowed and then faster again. It finally settled on a solid led and would not proceed.

I tried rebooting again but got the same sequence. The third time it rebooted itself about 5 times but still got a solid led and no POST.

Reading up on this forum I found somebody with a very similar problem but with a P8P67 PRO board. I followed some of the advice shown there and moved just one stick of RAM to the socket furthest from the CPU and got POST first time. This time however it became stuck at the Asus flash screen where it wouldnt accept my press of "Del" to enter BIOS. I switched off and tried every possible configuration of RAM, including the one that had worked previously but could not replicate results. Always no POST.

At one time I did get to the American Megatrends screen where it asked me to press F1 to setup my CPU but it wouldn't acknowledge the button press. I did notice on a screen prior to this though that my RAM was showing as 1333MHz and not 1600MHz.

Well, I decided to sleep on it and woke this morning determined to get it working. I dug out the RAM from my old build (Corsair Dominator DDR3 TW3X4G1600C9D), popped it into the socket furthest from the CPU and pressed the power button.....

It works! Well, it is working currently. Whether it will continue to or not who knows. Im actually scared to turn it off! Windows 7 64 is currently finalising installation. The problem is I only have 1 stick (2GB) of RAM in it.

So my questions are, I guess...

Is the RAM I bought faulty?

If I keep with my old RAM, which socket should I put the 2nd stick in?

There appears to be lots of complaints about this board, should I RMA and replace it?

Oh, and one last daft one (don't laugh!) - Why can't I hear the POST beep in my case? I plugged the HD Audio case lead into the Audio socket on the board but can't hear anything. Should I use the AC'97 lead?

Any help/advice/constructive critisicm will be warmly welcomed!

Ok, quick update - I've powered down and put the 2nd stick of old RAM in and things are looking fine so far.

Still confused by the new RAM not working and if I should stick with this board or RMA it.

take out the old memory reset your cmos then try the new memory again, if it doesnt work and the old stuff does when it goes in, i'd rma the memory.

the beep usually comes from a case speaker iirc not from your audio connection as such.

This!

I'd run memtest on it as well (can be ran from a bootable CD) as well just to make sure, but sounds like it's the memory

Thanks mp & king, not had an opportunity to try your suggestions out yet but will update when I do.

One thing about the case speaker though, my last 2 cases have had speaker leads which plug into the board along with the power/re-set/hdd led cables etc. This case only has an AC-97 or HD Audio lead (both 8-pin if i recall correctly) which plugs in seperately and in another location on the board.

sounds like it doesnt have a case speaker then, some cases don't :(.

Thanks for the help. I tried clearing CMOS and then re-booting with the new RAM in place but it wouldn't budge. Replacing the new RAM with the old RAM got it booting again.

I called the support folk ot OcUK and was advised that this RAM isn't really suitable for the board. I had spec'd my build based on suggestions on this forum where the board & RAM were mentioned numerous times together, and the sales person at OcUK confirmed that everything was compatible but oh well!

At least I know it's not my ham-fisted-ness that knackered anything! I've been sent an RMA number already so will be returning it for refund.

Thanks again for helping a new-guy out so promptly.
