Hi,

I didn't really know what I was after previously and having had a look around I have decided it's about time I also played a few more games on the PC.

Aiming for a very quick PC for development work (multiple applications open all the time + testing/debugging), plus also a bit of video editing and of course suitable to upgrade if required for gaming if I do get back into it.

I am after it being as quiet as possible whilst working, but when gaming I am not too fussed as will most likely have headphones on.

This is my current basket - it may well be overkill for what I need? or possibly ok for me to update when I increase to gaming on 4k monitors in the future (I want multiple monitors for work, but will only use a single screen for gaming I imagine).

I am aware it's missing monitors (I am after 2 x 24" the same, not 4k at this stage) suitable for gaming and work, and also a CPU cooler (Quieter the better) and a storage solution, I was looking at a M.2 for the OS and another SSD for additional storage, also is the PSU ok for the components/power required, or again more than is required (this could be replaced in the future if I did upgrade anything else).

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,119.52
(includes shipping: £14.70)

All suggestions appreciated, I was trying to keep the cost of this build down but I don't appear to be doing very well at that so far...

Overspending on the power supply, especially considering it's made by FSP. FSP are not a bad OEM at all, it's just that there are better for less money. Seasonic or Superflower are better in my opinion. EVGA's Supernova G2 750w is made by Superflower and comes with a ridiculous 10yr warranty and costs under £100

If you can afford it I also recommend the GYX980ti. Close to Titan performance for a lot less money. My son has one running a 27in Rog Swift and the gaming results are staggering. That or go for either the AMD R390 or GTX970 series - the 980 sits at an uncomfortable price point for me. £100 more than a GTX970 without £100 extra performance

Your other choices are all good. You could get 3200 RAM for the same money but I guess your choice comes down to colour. Besides, you won't see much tangible benefit from 3200 vs 3000 to be perfectly honest.

As for a cooler I can recommend Raijintek's Triton series and NZXT's Kraken based on personal experience. Both quiet, both easy enough to fit and both look great in my opinion. I did change the stock fans on both though. Corsair's H110 is also well regarded here. If you don't want an AIO cooler then I can recommend both Raijintek's cheaper air coolers and Alpenfohn's Matterhorn Pure - again, based on personal experience.

Storage wise the Samsung 850 EVO Series M.2 250GB is reasonably good value at under £100. As for the second drive, all depends on how deep your pockets are really. I'd advise staying away from the Samsung Pro series as all they really offer the regular consumer is a larger read/write lifetime cycle. The regular drives have more than enough for the average user.

Good luck with the build

If you're going to be testing I think you should go for 32 GB so you can better run VMs. Personally, I'd get a second separate box for testing, but that would be much more expensive.

If you're unsure about gaming, go for the Geforce 970 or the Radeon 390 with the expectation of replacing them with next year's cards if you do get into gaming.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions, I have amended the items a little now, and added a couple (still trying to keep the costs down, maybe a smaller/cheaper cooler would be sufficient).

I think that cooler should fit in the case (according to the product details).

Still looking for some monitors and also I imagine thermal paste for the cooler? on my last build I used arctic silver, or are there better alternatives?

Up to date list with 2x monitor (want ones with a thin bezel), although I may just get one now and make do with one of my other monitors (I have a NEC 24WMGX + another Samsung 24" but the NEC screen has a few issues and the Samsung is on my old build that I let the children use.

The Gigabyte X99-SLI bundle is £10 cheaper and it has a full size ATX board.

Crucial Ballistic Sport DDR4 Ram is cheaper. You don't really need anything faster than 2400MHz for X99.

The Samsung 850 EVO M.2 SSD is expensive compared to the regular SATA version and it isn't any faster. The Crucial BX100 is better value ATM.

Same goes with the MX200. It is overpriced compared to the BX100 or Samsung 850 EVO for the 500GB version.

id take slim sides over a fat bottom :)
i like the dell 25inch but its a lot more monies i guess
their 24inch isnt bad too!?

All looking good, I think I will use my existing monitors for a month or so and then buy a couple as it should reduce the impact of a new build just before Christmas!
