Hi,

All the components have now arrived for my build over the weekend. A couple of questions have just occurred to me whilst reading some online build guides:

1) Should I install the PCI WiFi card straight away, or install windows (7) first and deal with internet connection/activation afterwards?
2) Do you recommend installing the CPU/HSF and Memory with the motherboard inside or outside the case? Which is easier?

Thanks,
David

Hi,

1: doesn't make a difference with most wifi cards so whatever is easiest for you.

2: depends on what sort of heatsink and fan you have for your motherboard as fitting RAM is often dependant on the HSF size anyway. I usually fit a HSF outside of the case as putting backplates on is usually vastly easier outside of a case unless your motherboard tray has a good sized hole in the back of it for access, but yet again, depends which HSF you have.

It's just the stock AMD supplied HSF for a Phenom II 960T, so nothing too big!

Might as well fit it all outside of the case then, but just take care in what surface you actually put the motherboard on if you apply any pressure whilst putting on the AMD HSF. I'm not familiar with the AMD mounting system sadly as I've stuck to intel for around 7 years now but I'm sure someone will clarify for you :)

Slight dilemma. Am going to be fitting two 120mm fans at front of case (mid height and low). Both 120mm, but one is 800rpm and the other 1000rpm. Which way round should I mount them for the most efficient airflow? There is also one 800rpm 120mm at the rear of the case - at high level.

Not an expert but if it was me I would try the 800rpm at the front, at the bottom of the case, and keep the rear case, high fan.

You can monitor your temperatures and check that this is efficient cooling for you. That is how most cases are designed to work.

Going to find an article you can read.

My other top tip about building rigs is read all the motherboard instruction manual, usually a lot of info in their, your case hopefully also has a good guide with it. Back in a mo with a link.

Thank you, but to clarify I have three fans in total. Just wondering where I should place the 1000 rpm. The other two are 800 rpm.

Settled for the 1000rpm at the back in the end.

All up and running now. In the bios setup for my M5A78L-M/USB3 I am unsure how to set "plug and play OS" in advanced PCI/PnP settings. Default is "No", but I am unsure how to set after reading the description and manual. I would be grateful of some guidance please. Thanks.
