new build restrting every 5 seconds

specs are as follows:

E5700 + the pentium heatsink it came with
gigabyte ds4
x1950 xt ICEQ3
2x 1GB cheapo kingston DDR2 6400 RAM

just some spare parts i had from a previous build + some cheapish bought parts. mainly for my brother to use the internet and play a few not very demanding games.

so ive tried:

different PSU - same result
RAM - used single sticks in the first slot and both together then swapped - same result
resetting CMOS - both removing the battery and/ or shorting the pins - same reult

tried without anything but RAM, CPU, PSU + mobo- same result
tried RAM, CPU, PSU Motherboard + HDD - same result

so im officially stumped and guessing the motherboard or CPU may be the problem. there isnt any beeps of any kind.

any help would be much appreciated. :)
 
Apart from not plugging a power connector properly, this is usually a sign of a short somewhere, possibly motherboard on the case, can you try it outside the case (carefully).

thx for the replies, i cant rma the MB as far as im aware, its like 4 years old now, worked fine in my previous build. might try swapping out the cpu tomorrow morning to rule that out.

the case i chose is some crappy £13 thing, i removed all the components earlier too and put them all back in so not sure if theres a short somewhere. i got all the spacers in that the MB can take so it should be lifted off the back tray.
 
4 years for a board is a good life span tbh... the most a board has ever lasted me is 3 years...

just buy a new one dude, the board is dead.

3 years what do you do to your boards :eek: my dad has my very first gaming pc i built thats 10years old thats still going strong only thing that i had to replace on it was the harddrive and thes only because he thought he would clean the computer when i was away and for some reason god knows why he took the harddrive out and then acidently droped it in water (yes i did tell him what a plonka he was) all my motherboards last lol
 
its a Gigabyte S-Series GA-965P-DS4

i googled this problem earlier today and of the dozens of links i think only one mentioned a bios update as a possible solution, i dont evene know how to go about doing it lol, im guessing its a ball-ache.

anyhow ill check back in the morning. :)

I loled at this... Had vision of grandad from only fools n horse trying to clean it and u as David Jason... 'you plonka!!!' lol
 
nice update, so ive swapped the CPU for an E6300 which i used to have paired with the Mobo and im now currently reformatting the HDD. :)

so, either the E5700 is duff or its incompatible with the Mobo. im going to get windows up and running then look @ updating the bios.
