I've been putting off a new build for a few years, but my current system (now 13/14 years old) is starting to run into some issues so I fear is on its way out soon.

The only thing i'll move over from my old build is my AMD RX570, and perhaps at some point next year i'll look at upgrading it to something like the RX6700XT.

Assuming I can get a good lifespan out of the new build, I probably wouldn't plan to upgrade for 8-10 years, so based on that it makes sense to me to pay that little bit extra for an AM5 build now rather than an AM4.

Basket so far:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £690.47 (includes delivery: £10.50)

For a case, i'm thinking either the Lian Li O11, or perhaps the Fractal Design - haven't yet much looked at cases.

Which leaves a motherboard and CPU cooler. Air or AIO?

Also is it worth spending the £20 extra on the NVMe with a heatsink? I know NVMe's can get hot, is it worthwhile going for a manufacturer added heatsink, or a 3rd party.

Most motherboards have heatsninks built into them for nvme. They might not have heatsinks for all the drive spaces but its no worry unless your using 3+ in general.

I use a standard 011 dynamic and unless you want the XL or Evo models then you really need to use water cooling as the stock case doesnt support big air colers.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,159.80 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Air cooling in the right case. (be sure to check cooler height clearance of case)

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £221.95 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Thanks!

Yeah it'll only be the single NVMe at least to start with.

I think I'm pretty set on the Lian Li O11-Dynamic, and will probably look at the Lian Li Galahad AIO cooler too.

I'll have a look at those 3 mobos, they're all similar in price so I'd assume specs will be very similar.

Its a lovely case for water cooling. The Galahad coolers are well regarded as well but just remember thant he 011 doesnt have any fans as standard so there is no need to get matching ones with the aio etc (if thats your thing).

Yeah I had noticed, although raises a question of how many extra fans one might need. How many are you running in yours, and does it have an AIO or all air?

I've been reading the sweet spot for DDR5 is around the 6000MHz, it's not much of a price step up from 5600MHz, but I guess it's a question of whether it'd be worth it on a 7600X as opposed to something more high end.

Also, the RX6700XT recommends a power supply min of 650W, is that 750W Phantec likely to be a bit of a push considering the other components - haven't looked at CPU consumption etc yet. They (or at least ocuk) don't seem to do a 800/850 version.

I run a custom water cooling rig so have 9 fans in it. The simplist way to do it is have the same amount of fans in and out or with more in than out.

If you run a twin fan AIO on the top venting out run 3 fans in the front side pulling in air.

Yes 6000 is the sweet spot. Why throw potential performance away for the sake of a few extra pounds? They all run the same cores so will all benefit wether 4 cores or 32 cores.

The 750 will be fine. The 7600 is relatively frugal on power. The main power hog is the GPU.

Would the AIO not be better on the side for cooler air coming in, as opposed to exhausting the warmer air? Seems logical to me, although in reality might not make any difference. I've never looked at how well the AIOs work at different temperatures.

Any thoughts on this for a final build?

Some of the motherboards didn't have a PCIe 5 slot. I figured if I don't plan to upgrade for 5+ years then I may as well get one that already supports 5.0.

Anything I'm missing? I've already got all peripherals, and a monitor. Will also use my rx570 in the meantime.

M2 You can get 2tb sn770 for the same price as the 1tb 850x .

Alternative psu I think comes with white cables.

Thanks, hadn't actually looked at whether there were any white PSUs. Luckily on the O11 the PSU is mostly hidden.

I was watching a few videos of the Gigabyte Aorus Elite AX where they removed the heatsink for the NVMe slot. If you buy an NVMe with a heatsink would this get in the way?

Pretty sure if you buy a NVME with a heatsink you will not be able to use the motherboard one as well.

I would get one without and use the motherboard heatsink, it will cool good enough and look better.

Thanks, that was my worry about buying one and then finding it wouldn't fit.

I guess my next debate is whether I go for the slightly slower SN770 but with double the capacity, or stick with a SN850X.

You could go for the SN770 2TB and see how you get on and if you are not happy with it, use it as a game drive and get the SN850X

At that price it is worth a punt.
