Ok I have just built my first pc:

AMD 64 4000 San Diego
2 Gig OCZ Platinum Ram
BFG GeForce 7900 GTX
Asus A8N-Sli SE Motherboard
Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 64 Cpu cooler
80Gig Sata Baracuda harddrive
Thermaltake Soprano Case
Dvd Rw e.t.c

This was all new, but i bought a second hand Tagan 480watt PSU which was apparently working before it was posted. Anyway i put the system together to the best of my capabilities, wasnt too sure on where some wires went since ive never done it before and didnt have the psu manaul. So i plugged the cable into the PSU and it shorted, the house trip switch flicked. I then tried it with the main PSU switch off and even when i plugged the cable into the main then it tripped the power. Now i used the spacers between the mobo and case, but i dont think the power should even be getting past the PSU with it turned off right? Ive been told its most likely a faulty PSU and ive taken it in to be looked at by people who know what they r doing. But do you guys have any suggestions on what could be causing this?

Cheers.

Ok cheers, well i know the cable isnt faulty as im using it on this pc, and they also tested the cable, so i guess its the PSU, Anyone recommend me a good PSU for around £50, could do with a 500+ watts one.

Tagan 430w modular is your best bet for that system. It comes in at 26A on the 12v+ rails so your in good stead.

Try building it out of the case, perhaps standoff/case/back plate is shorting somewhere (did on one of my builds even though nothing looked liked touching)

Checkout the Enermax Liberties...although it's possible the PSU was ok, and something on your system is blowing them?

No, if it was still causing the MCB to trip even when the switch on the PSU was in the off position then nothing inside the case would cause that to happen- it would have to be something in between the wall socket and PSU ;)

If it is the psu this comp shop sell a 550 watt unknown psu for 29.99, would this do the job? what do you miss out on by buying a cheap PSU compared to say a Hiper 530Watt type R. Im not sure wether to spend the extra 30 odd quid as i dont know what differences there are.

Well firstly, please take the swearing out of your post :) Secondly, don't buy it!! :p It's most probably some crappy q-tech style thing that only outputs about 300W and has awful rails and I really wouldn't risk it with that sort of hardware because when a cheap PSU goes bang, the rest of the hardware connected to it goes too :D  You need a good solid PSU, so maybe look at the Enermax Liberty series- it's a bit more than you wanted to pay but you really can't skimp on the PSU :)
