NEW BUILD SPEC

Hi Guys

I am planning on building a new pc and I would be grateful for any ideas or comments on the following parts:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
Cooler: Thermaltake BigTyp 120 VX or OCZ Vindicator or Scythe Infinity

Mobo: Intel D975XBX2 - Core 2 Extreme Edition LGA775 i975X ATX Gigabit LAN OR Asus P5K Deluxe WiFi Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2

RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz OR Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)

GPU: BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 640MB GDDR3 550Mhz

PSU: Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2

HD: Western Digital Raptor X 150GB (is it worth the price)

Case: Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case

I am planning on overclocking the CPU, GPU and maybe the RAM.

My budget is about £900-£1000.

I would really appreciate comments on the mobo and if there are any other better ones.

I would go for the Asus P5k deluxe wifi. Intel board overclock difficult
as for the memory personally i would go for pc6400 but allot of people can tell you that crucial overclocks very good, i've got no experience with them on the other hand. For the rest looks good to me.

The Raptor is defenitly worth it's value, i'm going to seat 2 myself in the near future, 2 36 GB in raid 0, and one WD 3200 KS for storage.

That crucial ram is very good, mines running at 750mhz 3,3,3,8, and only had it a day out the box.

Personally i dont think the raptors are worth it, especially the larger ones. The only real benefit i see from faster hard drives is operating system's loading up faster, and for that you really dont need 150gb.
So get a cheap one if at all.

Go for a p35mb unless you really have to have sli or something, there performing well.

The Quad Core will overclock to 3GHZ+ quite easily.

The Tuniq Tower is a fine CPU Cooler and will keep that Quad nice and cool.

The Asus P5K Intel P35 is a great board, reliable, solid and great overclocking poteinal.

The Crucial Memory is fantastic stuff, will hit 1000MHZ+ with ease.

The 8800GTX is a beast of a card and you certainly wouldent be disapointed.

The Western Digital Hard Drive is very reliable and quiet.

The DVD Drive connects to your mobo via SATA Connection, this way you can cancel the IDE controller which will help with boot times and also you can getrid of them ugly IDE cables.

The Corsair PSU is one of the best PSUs around, very reliable and quiet.

The case is up to you but take a look at the Akasa one i have specced for you, fantastic build quality and great cooling as well.

The Western Digital Raptor is a waste, why would you get one when you can get a much bigger Hard drive which is half the price and a juicy GTX.

You will warrant from a GTX more than a Raptor if you ask me.

Are there any other coolers or cases you would recommend, anyone?

I did want a GTX but wasn’t sure to go for it as I heard the 9800’s are coming out November/December. :confused:

This one is one of the best air coolers your get but then that will put you over budget.

As for the 9800s no one really knows when they are out, everyones speculating this year but they dont know for sure.

i will need to buy a 120mm fan to go with the thermalright, right?

Nope i dont belive they do.

They are both fantastic boards you cant go wrong with neither to be honest. If you want to order soon since the Abit board is out of stock go for the Asus P5K one.
