It's a long shot but have you tried each stick of memory separately?

I have a suspicion the Phenom could be defaulting the memory to higher than it likes.

I have yes, although that was before i updated BIOS; i will try it in a little bit - the power supply is currently busy powering the other new PC getting everything installed on it - i'm reusing the power supply powering 'this' PC on one of the new PC's - hence why i'm one short.

YES! would you believe that taking out the second stick of RAM, it is now booting up every single time? Why is this though? (And note i did actually try this before updating BIOS too)

and yep, stick the second stick back in, and doesn't get through to bios

or maybe not; i tried with just the other stick of ram, and nothing happened, swapped back to the way it was working; not working anymore :/

cleared the cmos, and it's booting again with 1 stick

RIGHT, determined it is definately faulty RAM.

Whichever MoBo i use with whichever CPU, one of the sets of RAM works with both installed, and the other doesn't

after playing about some more, i've managed to get both systems working.

I never knew computers could be so unpredictable
