Gaming build £1200-1400

Posted a while back at end of March looking for suggestions for a new PC build. Got some great help but before I bought the PC something when wrong with my car (it always picks the worst times to break heh) so had to scrap the PC.

So now I am back in a position to build a new PC.

Main use is going to be gaming/browsing. Will be looking to future proof as much as I can since I dont expect to be buyin another PC for a while. My last budget was around £900 but Im now realistically looking at closer to £1200-£1400.

I dont need an O/S but everything else is pretty much going to go so Ill need new keyboard/mouse etc as well. Monitor I am still undecided on tho It would be nice to have 1 inc in a £1400 budget. Any additional fans/coolers etc should be inc in the budget as much as possible.

I had thought of going i5, but now that Im pushing the budget up I wasnt sure if i7 would be an option, but heres what Ive got on my first attempt as in i5 attempt.

Ive went for the ATCS 840, tho I MIGHT change that to the Lian Li A71 before I buy. The build gives me around £200-250 for a monitor.

Either that or go for a more i7 Build and Look at USB 3, or stick with i5 and go for a 2nd 5850 in the build.

Anyway here it is, suggestions welcome please :)

Thx for the advice, will swap the RAM for the suggested one.

Truth is Im not to sure with regards to timings etc so picked Corsair since they were recommended to me.

Ive also looked at the possibility of going for the i7 920 since I can afford it, and was wondering about which Mobo would be better?

Something like this:

Any thoughts?

Any1 give me any suggestions on the 2nd build in particular? Ive never really looked at the i7 (its mainly focussed on i5) but the more I think about the 2 builds theres a small difference in cost to get the i7. It might been I wont get the best of monitors but I think I could live with that.

Its really just the choice of mobo with the i7 Im not convinced about and if I should spend more on getting the UD5 X58 or stick with the UD3R X58.

I've recently got an i7 920 and the Gigabyte GA-X58A ud3R board together with Geil Black Dragon ram and it runs like a dream - I've overclocked it to 3.8Ghz so far with ease, and I'm sure it'd go higher if I get around to trying it.

From what I've read there's little point getting the more expensive motherboard unless there are any particular reasons for doing so - performance seems to be the same.

edit - as you need a cooler, case and psu you might consider this bundle (I got the same one but with the 850W psu). The case is massive, but beautifully designed and the cooler does a great job.

do u plan on crossfire at some point ?

if not, then u could save money by reducing your psu, 850W is total overkill for a single GPU.

thats the kinda PSU u would need for triple SLI

the HX650 would save you about £50-60
and it will still be powerful enough for crossfire

£200 would get u a decent 24" monitor as well

+1 :p

But I like the i5 build, but put a HX750W & a GTX480 on it. I'm sick of my ati's problems :(

Im a NV fan boy but I have to say the GTX480 is not what you want to get, its only like what 5-10% better than a 5870 and it cost soo much more, its almost close ot the price of a 5970. IT is the fastest card but the pricing really sucks on it, the GTX470 like the 5850 couterpart and it priced at 5870 price range which is just stupid imo. Stick with ATI for now.

I was planning on doing crossfire a few months down the line yeah. Was thinking of going for 2 x 5850s and thought it would be best to go with the bigger PSU now so Im not spending for a new 1 3 months down the line :)

Thanks for all the suggestions, Im pretty much going to go for the i7 build! Might change the PSU to a 750 modular rather than the 850 to save some money.

All I need to do is find a good gaming monitor to compliment the build :)

One last question with regards to the RAM as I have settled on everything else bar this.

Can anyone suggest which RAM is better out of the following, or are they all pretty much the same as each other?

The only realy difference for me seems to be in some timing differences, cost wise etc they all seem to be the same.

The other issue I have is the GIGABYTE site stating:
3) Support for DDR3 2200/1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules
All those RAM are 1600 MHz, so would I have to look lower done at the 1300 RAM like:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-088-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1390
Or will the the 1600 still run A OK on the X58A UD3R?

My last question (I think :p) before buying, cheers :D
