New build teething problems

Hi I am having some trouble with my new build. The problem is that at intermittent times my PC will freeze up completely, the mouse and keyboard do not respond and any animations on the monitor simply freeze. I am left with no other option but to cold reboot my system.

It seems to be worse when I try and run my RAM at the rated 1600 mhz so I am left with running it at the mobo default of 400mhz with 9-9-9-24 timings, apart from the voltage which has to be manually changed to 1.9 volts (the recommended operating voltage) to get it to even boot up.

I have tested both RAM modules separately using memtest and both were fine after 3 passes each with no errors, however when I try testing both modules at the same time the system crashes and reboots.

I have the RAM in the recommended dual channel slots and have even tried shifting from one bank to another with the problem persisting.

Could this be a PSU problem ? I have used my old Jeantech 405 watt PSU and was worried it may not be enough.

The rest of my system is as follows :

AMD Phenom II 955 Black @ stock speeds
4 GB OCZ 3P13334GK Platinum Edition
ASUS m4a785td-v evo (latest bios revision v2002)
1 x CD/DVD RW drive
1 x SATA HDD
1 x Nvidia Geforce 7600 GT (being upgraded soon !)
1 x USB wireless reciever

Any help help in ironing out this problem would be much appreciated.

Personally, I wouldn't trust that PSU with a shiny new quad core system.

In the mean time, you may want to try the system without the 7600GT (using the onboard graphics) to put the minimum load on the PSU as possible and see if the issues are alleviated or resolved.

Well then my guess would be the PSU.. couuld be the motherboard, but should always be careful about potential psu problems..

edit: as andi suggests, try to strip off some components to try to ease PSU load..

Thanks I'll give it a go. I only really used it to get the system up and running and to make sure all the components worked. Ive got my eye on a HX750 and should have it in a week or so. Is it possible for a rubbish PSU to cause a system to freeze and to not allow RAM to be used at full potential ?

it certainly is possible, if not a symptom. When it comes to faulty/rubbish PSUs, freezing can easily become the least of your problems :(
