Hi all,

I'm getting the parts for my new build today, and just wanted to get some input and advice.

I'm experienced at building PC's I've built dozens, my new build is actually a 'Triggers broom' going back to about 2005:D I will actually be removing the last part from the original one with this build! (DVD burner)

Anyway current spec...

Any advice for the new build? It's my first time using m.2/NVME, and Bios quirks I need to address to get it running as a Boot Drive?

How easy will Windows activation be since I'm replacing probably all the parts it has taken note of?

I'm re visiting my airflow, what do you think will be best for the case?

IN - Front 140mm
IN - Side 230mm
IN - Side 2 x 120mm
OUT - Back 120mm
OUT - Top 2 X 200mm (with H100i sitting below with 2 x 120mm blowing out)

I'm using the same MoBo / CPU combination and you'll need to update the BIOS to get it to recognise the M.2 drive. I had problems with the latest one so installed the 2nd newest instead, running perfect now. Another thing is make sure you select XMP profile for the RAM (unless you wish to run at stock speeds) as using the BIOS to set optimised defaults adds far too much voltage.

Not sure on Windows activation, are you using 7 or 10? Think 7 is simple but gather 10 can be a massive PITA.

Cooling wise that looks fine, should get some pretty sweet temps and keep things quiet with that much airflow.
 
I already have the latest bios on a memory stick ready to go I'll add the second one too cheers for the tip. Did you know a new one was released last week? Is that the one you were talking about?

It's Win 10 I'm using. I don't know what is best to do. Perform the new build and use my existing boot SSD to try to activate it my existing licence on the new hardware then do a fresh install on the m.2 or just do the fresh install and try to get it to activate.

My CPU temps were always fine, is was my Graphics cards that where the problem, not enough clearance for the fans so the top card would overheat and throttle the better spacing on this mobo should sort that!
 
Just checked the Asus website and wow, they really have been smashing out the BIOS updates! Checking the dates on my build log think mine would be Version 1202, so they should definitely have fixed any issues that occurred with the next BIOS by now... Might be time for me to think about updating!!

Personally I'd go with trying a fresh install on the M.2, as I guess even if you used the current SSD to boot it would still give the same activation issues due to the new motherboard etc. Definitely worth asking someone who's tried it though before jumping in with both feet and causing more work for yourself :)
 
windows 10 cant be reused on a new board as far as im aware.

when I built my current system I used the upgraded 10 on my old system for my niece and used my old version of windows 7 on this one. its offered me the upgrade again but still happy on W7
