New build up and running, but i have driver problems !

Hi all,
Have finaly put my 1st build pc together and hey presto, , nothing went bang, , no error beeps. Seems like its all working so far.

I have the ASUS P5Q motherboard.

I couldnt get my head around installing the drivers and utilities disc that came with the mb, it kept asking for flash drive copy or going to a make disk window.

Being unsure about in which order to load things i decided to skip the asus dvd altogether for now and just go ahead and install vista 64 bit.

Vista starts the install process and goes thru the usual language and product key windows, but when it gets to the window where you choose which drive to install vista on then the problems start.

I have a 320gb and 2 x 500gb sata drives installed, , , the 320gb is the drive which i want to install onto, but whenever i click that particular drive, it says it cant find the disks drivers and then starts asking for floppy discs and insert drivers cd etc.
I tried putting in the asus driver cd but windows still cant find the driver.

I am completly stuck and cant progress any further without some advice and help.
One thing i have learnt though is, , the asus dvd is full of bloatware that i dont need )and dont want ), , , What drivers do i need to complete the vista 64 install , , where can i get them from, , and how do i install them !

I'm surprised to hear of this problem as I've not come accross Vista asking for a floppy disk like XP used to.

Personally, the way I'd get around it is by downloading the latest drivers off the asus website and then using vlite to make a slipstreamed installation disk with the required drivers added.

I've not done it with Vista as I've never had the need, but thats how I got around it with XP.

And yes, the Asus driver disk is full of rubbish, dont use it.
 
I appear to be up and running now , , dont know how though !

I tried someting different for some reason and it did the trick.

When installing vista x64, when it got to the product key page, , i just skipped it without putting the key in. It then went on to do a successful , clean install on the single 320gb sata drive.
Once it had installed correctly, i went and put the product key in, , hey presto , , accepted and all working as it should. Will need to reactivate over the phone as i couldnt do it online, but thats no hardship considering the 14 or 15 hrs i spent trying to install it in the first place !
Anyway, , was then able to install all the neccesary drivers from the asus dvd after the install completed.

Once i was happy that it all seemed stable i decided to re-connect the other two 500gb sata drives again, , ,thats where the problem has kicked in though , ,:mad:

In system properties etc, , only the 320gb sata drive with the OS on it appears, , :mad: The 2 x 500gb sata drives are nowhere to be seen ? ?

They are in the bios properties under IDE , , the only other 2 options in bios are, raid and ahcp , , , shouldnt there be an option for SATA ?

This is my first build and so far, (despite yesterdays probs instaling vista) things appear to have gone well, , ie the mb ram and cpu are all working as they should.
I have internet and email and my BFG OC 8600GTS seems to be working well with the x64 drivers from nvidea, , its just the 2 missing drives ? ?

Any ideas anyone ?

Good to know

Get also latest mobo chipset drivers & BIOS firmware. Find them all on Asus's website.

The chipset driver need to be installed first before anything else.

All sata drives are up and running now and pc is doing everything it should.:D

The bios date is dated june 2008 ( v 0703 ), ,so , is there any need to update the bios and firmware ? ?
I mean whats the point if the pc is running fine without any apparent faults (so far ), what improvements will i acheive if the bios is only 5 months old ?

Even though its supposed to be very easy on this particular board, i have always been terrified of flashing the bios and i am still very wary of doing it now that this 1st build has gone so well and the pc is fine at this moment in time.

BIOS updates are not just 'improvements' but crucial fixes for any issues the manu might have found & or support for new components or just some which they might have found issues with e.g. GFX, RAM, etc.

From own experience, always flash the BIOS from boot-up or DOS. But if you say everything is running fine... :)
 
No,no, , dont get me wrong, if i need to flash the bios then i will.
Am just afraid that it will bugger things up.
The pc is running fine at the moment, mainly because i havent had any experience with a quad core cpu and 4 gb of fast ram before, , , the difference from my previous pc is is like comparing a horse and cart with a buggati veyron, , , Its amazing and i dont want to balls it up by messing up the bios.
Besides, , i have just had a gander at the asus download site for the P5Q PRO , , , my god, there is about 30 driver downloads, , most of which are only a few weks newer than my existing drivers. How on earth do you decide which ones are appropriate for my motherboard ? ? ?
 
After you select what OS your using (i.e Vista 64 bit), use each of the categories, such as "sound" or "network" to find the latest driver, look for the one with the highest "VERSION" number.

The main ones you will want is Chipset, sound and network drivers. However asus don't always have the latest drivers on their website, especially the chipset drivers so you could go on to Intel's website and search for the latest chipset driver if you want.

If you have already installed the drivers, and not experiencing any problems then I wouldn't bother to update them. Graphics card drivers are the only driver I update.
 
Yeah , I might just leave it for now, vista x64 is sweet as a nut and i havent experienced any other problems as yet, although its still early6 days.
Updated the graphics and soundcard drivers this morning so all ok there as well.
Am not against having the very latest drivers, but if i dont have any probs, then why take the chance of buggering the system with a dodgy driver.

Watch this space !
