Hello,

Sorry this may seem a really silly question.

Hopefully going to start building my daughters new Christmas PC tomorrow, so thought I would spend this evening getting software prepped.

Just wondering the best way to go about installing a new copy of Windows 10 onto the machine? I was going to get the downloader tool onto a usb then get hold of a key.

Is this the best way to go about it or should I really be looking to do something else? Is there anything I need to do before installing Windows 10? (obviously build the PC :D)

Hope this sort of question is ok.

Thanks for your help

Funny I had the exact same question...

Will build a new system soon and looking to put win 10 on it. Ie the best cheapest way please

If you have or can get any old retail 7/8/8.1 key's they will transfer to win 10 for a full retail install.

cheapest OEM key from a place I consider legit is £18 quid. theunity****.com

Hi Nutella33,

Thanks for the information. I think I have a couple of old laptops running windows 7 or 8, hopefully I will still have the keys so may give that a go. I downloaded windows 10 last night using the downloader tool. Can I just put that key in on the activation page?

Thanks again

install Windows 10 on your new computer using the creation usb tool, skip past the key prompt on install and then once installed go to Settings > Update and security > Activation > Change product key and enter the Windows 7/8 retail key.

Has to be retail, not an OEM key. It'll activate on your account. you might need to ring a robot to tell it you have that license on just one computer and put in two really long confirmation codes, but it saves you the cash and faff of finding a cheap legit win 10 key.

If the keys you have are OEM and not retail, I'd guess you can find a very cheap win 7/8 retail key online for less than a win 10 one and do the same process...

Thanks Old School, I didn't even think to check out the tubers. I have done one via an old laptop I had, starting to think I threw the second one out . I did see a W7 key for £6 but I think it is OEM so probably wouldn't upgrade to 10 on my new build from what I am reading.

Django - on the link you posted do you just download the one you want? Not had a chance to look properly yet only on my phone.

Yep, exactly that, chose the main version (ie Pro), and if you want Enterprise, you click additional editions, any feature / patch builds you specifically want, download the zip and you'll get 3 build scripts (one for Windows, Mac and Linux) so you can download Windows on any of those machines by running the relevant script file, it will head off to the CDN and pull together and make a nice ISO for you.

You can if you really need to, use Win 10 totally free, but you'll be locked out of some customisation features, like setting a desktop background (there's a way to work around that particular one).

Personally i'd roll the dice with a cheap key (7 or 10), for 10 quid, it's a gamble but a cheap one. Technicalities aside of the validity of your windows, if it validates on the PC and it updates, that's good enough for me.
