If I were to build a new gaming rig, but using my old graphics card would it be a waste/graphics bottleneck- or is a new videocard a must ie 8800GTS? Res is 1900x1200.

ie E8400, 4GB RAM with a 1900XTX

depends what games you plan on playing and at what detail settings, but for most newer games to run well at 1920x1200 is gonna be pushing it for an x1900xtx

get one of the cheaper C2D's, sell your existing GPU and you should able to get a 3870 or 8800GT

Yes it would, but it depends on the game and what settings you are prepared to put up with, I've played Crysis on a 7900GS with an e8400 and its ok(just)

Could play at 1680x1050 scaling up. A base unit upgrade isn't too expensive, but adding another £150-£200 will bump up the cost.

What's your sys at the moment, as odds on a new graphics card is going to help your fps in games a lot more than more ram and a better cpu.

ram aswell considering its so cheap atm

DDR 1 :-( I've got identical 2GB Corsair XMS 3200 C2 in the HTPC, but that means the gaming rig will have 4 sticks so CAS 2, then need DDR 1 for the HTPC too.

Doesn't 4 sticks limit overclock? DDR1 is more expensive than DDR2, the 3870x2 is bit over my budget, although my motherboard has crossfire 3200 chipset, 2x16 PCI-E lanes.
