New build woes, Help! :-/

please dont try to justify my idiocy, that just makes it look even more lame :p

I would have asked the same question, I had no idea until I read this thread that an AMD system would boot without the BIOS update for the CPU in use. I would have assumed that if it boots then it can't be that. :)

I would like to say that i had the same thought. i actually just didnt even think about the BIOS update.

Maybe my subconscious was telling me that it couldn't be this BIOS if it boots.

I wouldnt have thought about the BIOS update either, that's what i meant. :p

It was my first thought

* only because when I got my 6800K I looked up the latest BIOSes and saw that Richland needed an update.

Tonight, i want some randomer to have exactly the same problem as me, google it, and find this page :) lol, that would make my day.

Going back on topic slightly. Does anybody have a rough guide for overclocking 6800k? Voltage limits etc. Only done intels before.

You don't need to do anything much at all. I was able to get mine to 4.5GHz or so on stock voltage, and I think it was at most 1.4v to get it to 4.7GHz. The GPU bit I took from the default (800MHz or so?) to about 1GHz.

From what I remember, 1.5v is about the highest you can use with air cooling, and that will take a 6800K around 4.8GHz to 5GHz. The main difference between the 5800K and 6800K is they've improved the overclocking potential a lot.

think im going to have to do the one thing i didnt want to do. Im hitting a load temp of over 77C at only 1.262v 4.3Ghz. At 1.35v i was hitting almost 90 :/

Lol, i am certain i remembered the TIM. It wasn't the easiest thing to fit. I didn't do a test fit before i put the compound on, and then the holes didn't line up so it needed a bit of higgery jiggery. I didn't expect it to make much difference but maybe got a fit of air trapped right in the middle. Wasn't my finest hour.

Already ordered some isopropyl and coffee filters to clean :P

EDIT: i should stress, once the HSF contacted the TIM i didnt pick it up and put it back, just slid it about a bit.
