Hi all

One day I'll build a pc that boots first time *sigh*...

Ok so I've finished a new build into a Corsair 5000x - all went fine although hooking up the fans was a bit of a head scratcher and I still don't know if I've done that correctly (I doubt that would be the cause of my problem though). Tried turning on for first time and the following happened:

motherboard lights up
CPU pump display lights up with a red triangle and exclamation mark indicating something is wrong.
Pressing the power button on the case results in a single beep and literally nothing else - no fans spinning.

Last time I built a pc I had a similar issue and it turned out to be a bent cpu pin which I managed to fix and had no problems after that. So I checked the cpu and it all looks perfectly fine.

The ram, gpu and psu are all components which I harvested from my previous build so I know they're decent.

The motherboard is a z690 Asus wifi.
cpu is Intel i7 12700kf

The cpu cooler is a Corsair h510 elite AIO.

I've checked and double checked all the connections.

Any help hugely appreciated as I'm completely stumped.

Are there any boot LEDs showing anything?

I had this once when I used the wrong screws to mount the motherboard and it resulted it a bad grounding. System wouldn’t power on fully.

Youve checked all power cable's so I would be tempted to build it outside the case with minimal components but before that check the cpu socket again.

Motherboard LEDs not lighting up although the RGB on the motherboard lights up.

Checked the motherboard screws, they're the right ones.

Going to try alternate usb 2 headers

Checked the CPU socket again VERY carefully, with a torch, zoomed in on my phone etc for ages. There's nothing wrong with it.

Checked the instruction manual for the mb and realised I hadn't removed the little cover from the lever to seat the CPU; sorted that and still the same problem.

Haven't tried other usb2 connections yet but getting worried now.

If the AIO is not happy it is presumably not providing an RPM signal to the CPU fan header. Maybe the board is refusing to boot for that reason?

Try connecting an ordinary PWM fan to the CPU header? If the AIO isn't running, though, you don't want the PC to be on for long if it does boot.

Just checked the ram and all good there.

Everything is pointing towards the CPU, aio or motherboard.

I did try moving the aio fan from the main CPU header to the aio pump header but that didn't make a difference.

Can you explain what you mean re. the pwm cable? I have the aio cable going in to the CPU fan header and also the pwm cable going from the case's fan module to another pwm fan header on the motherboard.

Literally out of ideas ☹️

Take the motherboard out the case as there could be a short , and do a minimal build as i mentioned before.

Pwm cable has an extra wire to control fan or pump speed.

The BIOS will expect to see an RPM signal on the CPU fan header to tell it the CPU cooler is working. You mentioned the Pump display showed a red triangle/exclamation mark which probably indicates the AIO isn't working correctly. Under those circumstances, I would expect the AIO would report a zero RPM to the motherboard fan header you have it connected to.

It's not always the case as some boards will boot anyway, but if you connected a normal fan to the CPU header that would elimate that as a possibility. But if your AIO is genuinely not working, then the CPU cooling will be compromised and you should switch the PC off straight away if it does boot.

If it does boot with a fan connected on the CPU header, then the problem lies with the AIO.

I found one thing I did wrong which was put the front panel power cable the wrong way round (+/-) - sorted that but only difference is I can now make it beep more than once when I press the on button... So not much help but at least that button will now work properly.

I think I understand what you mean re. testing with another pwm fan on the CPU fan header. If it does boot I'll immediately power down and then blame the aio - I think that's what you're advising.

Here's a pic of what I'm facing, just the 2 light indications and an awkward "beep" when I press the power button:

Not sure how to embed the image sorry

Mainboard stand-offs installed in the right places?

Not a random one causing a short?
The case already had standoffs so wasn't necessary. There's a good gap behind it so I think it's ok.

Just tried putting another 4 pin fan into the CPU header and got the exact same issue which I guess means it's not the aio??. I'm starting to think I'm looking at a bad mobo but really don't know.

There are no fans spinning which I find really odd. I have hooked up 10 fans of which only 3 are attached to the aio so why would the rest not even get power?

@ne0 looking at your photo of your motherboard is the cpu power cable in the correct connector ?

Normally it's the power connecter closet to the cpu socket .

Yeah the one it's in is marked "cpu fan". I tried the one labelled CPU "other" but got same result.

I also tried the aio pump header but same result. There is another header next to that, will try that.

Btw can someone explain to me why none of the 10 fans are spinning taking into account the other symptoms. I guess I would at least expect them to get power.

Yeah tried that one too but no result.

No, he means the 8-pin power connector that goes to the top of the motherboard.

Not sure - how are they connected?
