Hi guys,

I've tried to cover what I know in this message so that it makes it easier for your guys to help me.

I've just put together a new pc, all new components.
Intel 2500k 3.3ghz
MSI geforce gtx 560
Crucial M4 64gb
Coolermaster HAF 912
Antec truepower new modular 550W
Corsair XMS3 8gb
LG 10x Blu ray
Corsair A50 cooler
TP link wi fi card
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3

I put together all of the components (it's not my first time) and went to switch on the machine. There is no LED lighting up on the motherboard and the front case switch does abolutely nothing.

I've connected both motherboard power cables, both of the PCI-E power cables, all case and CPU fans, SSD and Blu Ray power cable.

I've shorted the green wire an black wire on the PSU and it this makes the PSU switch on, but still nothing when connected up to the motherboard etc. I've tried different house sockets, and known working power lead. I've tried running it with just the motherboard plugged in and still no joy.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Make sure that all the power cables are secure including at the modular end on the PSU.

Unlug and refit them if you want to make sure.

Motherboard standoffs installed?

Ive not tried doing an out of case boot but I that was my next try I guess. The only modular part of the PSU I'm using is one extra cable for the GPU and thats nice and tight.
Mother board stand offs installed and no extra ones fitted that could short it out.

Cheers

Ok so I've removed the motherboard. All that is fitted is 4gb 1600mhz memory into Slot 1, CPU with cooler and fan (plugged in) and both power connectors from PSU, still no joy :(

Sounds like a dead motherboard to me. If the PSU fires up when jump started but you aren't getting any power passed through the board, I can't think of another possibilty.

RMA time unless you have access to another compatible setup to check individual components.

ah ffs, I was hoping that wouldn't be the case. I've no access to other components. So do I have to return it to Gigabyte as opposed to taking it back to overclockers? They're only 15 minutes down the road from me, that's all

If it's still in warranty (1st year) with OC, I would ring the shop and ask if they could check it as they are local.

Do you get any lights on the motherboard lighting up when trying to power it up or when it is in an off situation ? Also does the motherboard have an on button on the motherboard ? If so try the motherboard on button and see if it comes on, could be you wired the on button for the case to the wrong part of the case header. Also try clearing the BIOS and leave the battery out of the motherboard for 5mins and hold the cmos clear button or jumper to clear the settings in the BIOS for 2mins and then try again to power it. Have you also made sure to connect the CPU power cable too the 8 pin cable near to the CPU ? The system won't work without it and if there is a cap to only show 4 pins remove the plastic cap and make sure to plug the 8 pin 4+4 pin cpu power cable in there. If all this fails try removing the CPU from the motherboard and check for bent pins in the CPU socket and do make sure not to over tighten the cooler, some coolers can warp the motherboards and make RAM fail and such problems you see.

No lights on the motherboard are coming on. It doesn't even try and power up, no beeps no fan spinning, just nothing.

8 pin power cable has always been attached, still nothing.

I've checked the wiring for the case switch and tried jump starting directly on the board, still nothing.

I havent tried resetting the BIOS but I am curious as to why this would make a difference? In my experience, even with a bad BIOS, the board at least tries to boot.

Cheers

Boards can't boot or startup with a bad BIOS, try clearing it and see how you go on and check the CPU socket for bent pins and try reseating the cpu and see from there, also if you have another PSU that would also help you to rule out a bad PSU.

Ok, reset the bios, re seated the CPU and checked for bents pins and still no joy. I'll see if I have a spare PSU that I can use, but I guess either way, either the PSU or motherboard is faulty? All brand new parts that came through the post today, I'm gutted

Yup either motherboard or PSU mate, could be even a bad CPU causing the system to not startup but I doubt it, most motherboards will start and show CPU error then (either by beeping or LED error lights). It is sounding like a bad PSU or Motherboard, next test for you mate is another good brand PSU, if no joy send the motherboard back mate.

Cheers for the help. I just need to put it away and leave it for now, will try and test it with a different PSU, after that, there's not much I can do until OC opens on monday :(

Yes don't panic you will have it up and running soon mate, we all go threw this at some point when building systems, I have been doing it for over 20 years, just stay calm and go threw the parts in a logical order to find what has gone wrong ;). I know it's heartbreaking to have new kit and it does not even power up, been there really. Just enjoy the weekend and sort it out Monday morning if testing with another PSU fails too.
