Hi there,

I've just purchased some new parts for a new custom build (My first). This is what i have bought.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66ghz
Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5400 Memory
Asus P5N-E SLI 650i Motherboard.
I-Cute Silver Mid Tower Case

I will be combining these components, with some from my current computer, which are as follows

ATI X1950 Pro
550w Power Supply
2x DVD+-RW
Western Digital 250GB Hard Drive.

The parts will be arriving tomorrow, and i will be posting pictures of the assembly.

Any advice for a first time system build?

Thanks for reading.

Hi there,

So, this morning all the stuff arrived, and i proceeded to biuld it up. Finally about an hour ago i got it finished.

I then plug my computer in, making sure everything is ready, i hit the power button, all the fans zoom into life, and i look at the screen........... Nothing.

So i unplug it all again recheck the connections to the gfx card (x1950 pro) everything seems fine.

Then i try again and i notice, when it just turns on a small red let on the card goes on and off.

So, is this my graphics card broken, or is it something simpler. Thanks for any help.

Tom.

Yeah have done that already, i have missed it before though, and it just leaves the red light on, this time though, the red light momentarily turns on then goes off.

Thanks though.

probably missing connections to motherboard like 8pin or molex or something, maybe power cable to gpu.

Checked everything again, and i had missed the little speaker connections, now getting a continous beep on attempt to boot. plz help getting worried that ive destroyed my first build :(

if i remember continious points to power problems.

should have 2 psu connections to the motherboard are they secured properly ?

Right, i got so ****** off with the damn thing that ive decided, to get the parts back out and see if the graphics works in my old set up.

Booted back up perfectly, which suggests i'm guessing, to motherboard failure, as i went through the maunal checking that everything was fine, and connected, everything was, and still when i tried to boot the graphics card would flash red, and no display.

So, does anyone know where i go from here, bought it from another site, not overclockers, dunno whether i'm allowed to say, but what do i do to return the mobo, please help me out.

First system build is not going well :(

would suggest NOT mentioning the other site :D

when u say you're other setup i take it that you have a second mobo ?

Well i'm just back to using my original setup, AMD 3700+, Ati Xpress 200 mobo, and all my hard drive and disc drive gear.

Have been on the retailers website, and requested a return, which they have arranged to send a courier on monday, gonna have another tinker in between times and rebuild it, to see if i missed anything.

Is it common for motherboards to fail out of the box? does this happen a lot?

thanks tom.

not common but can happen, take it the box looked new, not previously opened etc ?

The manual i found to be absolutley useless

for a start, the quick setup guide was provided in every language but english.

the main manual itself, had some reasonable instructions, but absolutlry no troubleshooting section anywhere, nothing about beeps, or anything. oh well, the company i bought it from, have organised a courier to pick it up sometime on monday, which means I won't be seeing another one until wednesday at the absolute earliest.

So, all in all my first build went terribly, second time lucky i hope.

So i also took some pictures of what i had in the end, just to show you,

will keep you posted when i get the new gear. thanks

tried running them in different slots, but didn't bother doing it with just one.

its all packed away until monday now, we'll see what happens if i get the new one. will keep you posted, thanks.

So, theres some great news and some not so great news.

I got it all booting up ok, and displaying, don't really know how, which is the wrong way to do i kno, anyhow. Now, whilst trying to boot into vista, the system resets, just after the vista loading screen, something to do with the drivers? i think.

Anyway, luckily i have an old IDE hard drive on hand, and so install xp on it quickly, so i am now in xp on one hard drive, and don't have a clue how to boot into my vista hard drive, with me?

So, i tried to use the asus driver cd, but if you put it in at startup it boots into some sort of RAID driver install dos facility thing, which i don't need, and dont kno how to get out of.

Any help apprecicated, thanks.
