New Build

I had a thread back in May for a new build, and Stulid suggested one that I was going to buy, but due to various real life things interfering it was put on hold. But I'm picking up a new PC this/next week.

Main uses: Bedroom TV (Main TV till we move house in a year), HTPC, gaming(Strategy games, RPGs, so Shogun 2, Skyrim, Civ 5, Starcraft 2 etc), accountancy programs (I'm a financial analyst, so lots of databases, but I doubt any software I use for this will stress a gaming computer anyways)

Budget was initially 1k, but I can stretch to what I've specced underneath by costing the monitor in my TV budget ;)

Please give me some advice on the build, and see if I've forgotten something!

Will everything fit in the case? Are the coolers in the bundle good enough for overclocking? Is the CPU in the bundle any good?

Back again:)

MSI currently have VAT cashback being offered on a few of their motherboards, look at these.

Save money by getting a 2X4GB (8GB total) RAM kit.

Get a Retail Blu-Ray drive so you receive some playback software.

You dont need the Artic Silver5 as the coolermaster heatsink has some paste pre-applied/in a tube..

Finally the PSU is a bit poor, if you wanted SLI then a 750W+ one is needed.

*bows down*

Will order some of it today and rest on Monday next week when the next paycheque drops into the mailbox!

How much overkill is this build btw Stulid?

I've been out of the hardware loop for so long, and have come to rely on people who're still in the loop, like yourself, to help out with all my purchases.

Decided to just buy the build today, so have just placed the order with OCuk :)

Time to get my thinking hat on and prepare for building!

That would be helpful Stulid :)

Last time I did this was with another Stulid build and that went fine, but can't ever be careful enough when we're dealing with equipment worth this much :)

Boxes arrived at work just now, the monitor looks massive!!

Will take some photos when I've unpacked everything. There is a worrying dent in the case box and one in the component box, and some scratches on the Monitor box. Hope nothing inside has been damaged.

So excited about putting it all together, just got my Windows 7 Pro as well today so good timing all around!

Booted on first try, all software and drivers installed without a hitch.

Couple of issues with the parts:
Fan heatsink is so large it hangs over the ram bank, so if I want another 8gig of ram I need to take off the heatsink!
There is only 1 3.5” bay, so will need to buy more bays if I want to fit more SSDs later as they all tend to come in 2.5” size with a 3.5” tray to mount it on.

Not enough power cable converters for SATA came with the build, mainly because no cables came with the Optical drive I presume.

The case has a converted bay though, so that solved the problems.

The 8 pin power cable to the CPU has to go around the back of the case to avoid crossing the Graphic card, so made cable management a bit tricky on that side. Otherwise cable management was good. All the cables had black webbing already, so that was a big plus.

Heatsink is so big that plugging in cables and the mounting screws around the cpu was a nightmare!

The case fans are fairly noisy, so will need to buy a couple of new fans to silence the build.

Cpu fan is like a stealth bomber, can hardly hear it running!

Boot time to windows desktop from pressing the on button is 8 seconds. (non overclocked)

I have some pictures that I'll try upload later :)
