It's been 6 years since I've bought any components so I'm clueless as to where to begin now! My current PC is used for downloading and streaming media to my TV. I haven't decided whether or not to upgrade the whole lot or just the basics (RAM/HDD's/CPU) or buy a new barebone system.

I have specced this below and it is coming in at ~£390, is that a little overkill on the CPU for what I'll be using it for?

Intel Core i3-4130 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s
Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz
Asus H81M-C Intel H81 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard
2 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD10EZEX - OEM ** Single Platter ** HDD

Thanks guys

For downloading and streaming the spec you've come up with is fine. The i3 is probably over-kill, but then any current hardware will be for the stuff it'll be doing.

It may be worth considering an APU build. Cheaper and offering similar performance. I've been able to spec in 2 x 2tb drives too.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Kingston HyperX 3K SSD 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (SH103S3/120G) £79.99
1 x AMD A8-5600K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD560KWOHJBOX) £71.99
2 x Toshiba 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA200) HDD £59.99 (£119.98)
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
1 x Asus A55BM-E AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2+) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £37.99
Total : £375.54 (includes shipping : £8.00).

pretty much this; it seems like it will suit your needs!

Cheers for all the specs! I notice someone said any current hardware will be overkill for what I intend to do, my current PC is an Intel E2180 socket 775, OCUK have a intel pentium e6700 which is a bit faster than my current CPU (3ghz compared too 2ghz, would I notice any difference?)

I could then buy some ddr2 RAM and upgrade the HDD's, could anyone tell me if all the HDD's mentioned in the thread would work with my Asus P5K SE motherboard?
