Good afternoon all,

It's been a few years since I have built my current PC, and am now in a situation where it is time to upgrade!

Usage will be general internet stuff and gaming.

Budget is pretty flexible but lets say £1000 for the rig. I will then be buying a monitor on top, so maybe £1300 including a monitor? Not sure on monitor costs/which are any good!

This place was a great help to me when I built my previous (and first) computer so thought I would come back!

Thanks for any help :)

Can you list your current spec.

A few years old would put it at sandybridge/ivybridge age and potentially still OK and will just need some tarting up.

So by a few years old I mean.. Probably around 2010?

I was intending to start fresh, but if there is any parts that I can use then sure!

AMD Phenom 965 X4 Processor Black Edition
MSI Cyclone GeForceGTX 460 Gfx 1024MB
Antec 300 case
Gigabyt M4A785TD-M Evo Mobo
Some type of 4gb DDR3 RAM. Honestly can't remember, it was a 1600mhz Corsair of some description!
Can't remember the PSU.. But would definitely be replacing that either way anyway.

That looks pretty much perfect for what I would need. I assume the 1070 is a better card though? Or is there not sufficient benchmarks available to determine that yet?

Sorry, with regards to the monitor, you'll have to forgive me but I know next to nothing about them What is free sync/g sync?

It might be easier to google that answer or watch some youtube videos on the subject.

Basically its giving you the benefit of Vsync ON (no screen tearing) with the benefits of Vsync OFF (variable refresh).

Gsync is Nvidias version and Freesync is AMD version.

Here's the sort of system I'd look to put together with your budget:

Intel i5-6600k or i7-6700k (depending on budget)
Z170 motherboard
16GB DDR4 2666Mhz (or faster)
Nvidia 1070 or AMD RX 480 (depending on budget)
550W Gold PSU
250 GB SSD (or larger if you can afford)
1TB HDD for storage (or larger if you can afford)

The type of monitor you choose will depend on if your focus is more on colour accuracy (in which case an IPS monitor) or high / variable refresh rates for gaming (which usually means a TN monitor with either Freesync or Gsync depending on your GPU choice). There are some IPS monitors aimed at the gaming market with Freesync or Gsync, but they tend to be at the more expensive end of the spectrum.
