Right,

My Civic Type R (EP3) has a knackered front brake caliper. It keeps jamming the pad onto the disc, gets hot, smells nasty, judders the steering etc.

I want to source the bits myself, but what will I need?

I've found these EBC calipers:

http://www.brakes4u.co.uk/products.asp?id=19870

Are they any good?

Am I likely to require any extra bits, i.e hosing/pipes etc?

Also, is it OK to change just the knackered one, or will it be safer to change both at once? While I'm at it, I'll order some pads too. EBC make good'uns i understand?

Cheers

They actualy remanufacture calipers, so you will get a Honda caliper with new seals, piston, bleed nipple etc. It should be at just as good as a new OEM caliper.

If there is nothing wrong with the other caliper, then changing one is ok, but if one is seized then the chances are the other may not be far behind. You'll be changing the brake pads anyway I presume, so you'll be able to check out the condition of the other caliper when you do that.

They actualy remanufacture calipers....

Oh, that'll be why they're cheap then! :D

I did find a company that did partial refunds for old calipers, but they didn't do any for the CTR.

Will keep hunting....

Oh, before I forget - what pads are worth looking at buying?

Right, so far I've decided on the calipers from brakes4u and the EBC red stuff pads.

Will I need fluid (sorry, I'm a total noob and will probs get my normal service guy to fit these and don't want the cheapest pee that normally would be put in by him), if so, is there something reasonably cheap worth looking at? I can't stretch to Motul stuff as it's ~£50 for 500ml. Also, how much am I likely to need (if I do need the system bled)?

Woah don't bother spending £50 on 500ml. I spend £4 on 500ml DOT4. Think DOT5.1 will be about £10 for the sort of stuff you need.

Yes, you will have to fully bleed the whole system, including the rear brakes. 500ml should do for a bleed.

YAY \o/!!!

No calipers in stock FOR 6 WEEKS!

I can't shell out the stupid amount that Honda will want (and still probably have to wait an age), which is awesome. So I'm stuffed really.

I'm not sure what to do, as I was hoping a week at the outside for the calipers to arrive. The wife will need the car for her work when she goes back next week, so 6 weeks driving up and down the A23 with one caliper with a sticky piston for her unless I can sort something out quicker.

Great.

Depending on how clued up your honda dealer is you may be able to get a refurb kit which is basically a new piston and rubber seals and refurb the caliper yourself. Pretty straight forward job on the fronts usually. And much cheaper than a dealer supplied caliper!

Otherwise just try a local motor factors, I'd be surprised if they couldn't get a refurbed one pretty quickly.
