New Call for Metric Road Signs

If you dont like it just think of it like this. You can get from 0-60 faster in kilometres then you can in miles:p

All arguments against doing this are the same ones that were used when money went metric in 1971.

How will we know how much money we have?
Everyone knows pounds, shillings and pence. No one understands 100p in a pound?

All twaddle and all stems from one simple thing.

People fear change.

Why needless? It makes estimating distances when talking to europeans simple. Most european registered cars only have their speedos in km so driving here is a pain.

And no one say "the americans have imperial and no one's complaining". The Americans also have George W Bush, can't spell colour properly, and call a gear lever a shift-stick. so are in no place to be made an example of with respect to the correct way to do things.

If they changed it back in 1971 every one would be used to i by then

We went one step further then changing from imperial to metric, we even changed to the dollar :D

I like MPH i dont expect Europe to change back to MPH to keep me happy and i dont expect them to change the side of the raod they drive on. So why should we change to keep them happy?

and metric-ise time too! :D 60s in an min, 24 hours in a day. 7 days a week? its all random. :(

Getting rid of all the old road signs will be easy, let the students take care of that :D

Seriously, if the gov't were to say "take any roadsign" they'd be gone by the morning :D

Because the rest of Europe use KM/H, we're the only ones too stubborn to change.

But we don't force the rest of Europe to come over here :), as cymatty said, why should we change for them.

To quote a friend I just told about the KPH thing on MSN:

[17:54] K says:
They can get ******

Spot on :D.

Yes, let's all show how ignorant and antiquated we are.

No lets show how independent we are by not doing and changing things at huge costs to keep Johhny forigener happy.

It carries about as much logic as changing the system in the first place. We all know what miles are, and what mpg is but how many people know what km/l is compared to mpg, or how far 120km is compared to miles???

Also ALL uk speedo's read primarily in miles per hour - so are we all going to have to squint to read the silly small numbers inside the dial or are the governement going to replace them all free...i mean impose a law that means we pay to have them changed

They are not going to change the 70mph limit to 70kph. There is no logic to it whatsoever.

and a 100 milliseconds in a second. Confusing metric and imperial. It should be 76ms in a second.

I want a 100km/h sign. :D

Why do we have mixed units? You buy 2 litres of diet coke, a kilo of sugar, yet distance are in miles and speeds in MPH. A mix of imperial and metric is more complicated, and illogical.

It'll happen eventually anyhow. Just as Kibibits and Mebibits will replace what we currently think of as Kilobits and Megabits. As the living populations knowledge of imperial units fades away, we'll all be measuring our heights in Centimetres, and our weights in Kilograms. Quarts and hundredweights have already gone that way.
