I have had my 350d for 8 years and it has done a sterling job for most of that period. My main use is general photography, mainly at family events and holiday snaps.

Last year I went on holiday to Japan and found the camera lacking in a few areas - I took some great photos but found the resolution a little low for large format prints and the low light performance was lacking.

I'm not sure what camera to go for now (needs to be a Canon). I really don't want to spend more than £500. Looking on digitalrev I can afford a 700d or a 60d. Which is better?

From those choices I'd go 700D it's more recent and for my money has slightly better electronics. The 60D has always disappointed me when I look at it but I guess that could because it spelt the death of the old xxd range as canon repositioned everything following the arrival of the 7D.

This would bring the 7D mk 1 into play, would a new 700d (£399) be better or worse than this?

The 7D is better in most regards but lacks modern general shooting luxuries like a swivel/touchscreen or SD card slot (CF is faster but more expensive and some consider less convenient).

The other thing you need to consider is weight and size, which one would you be happy carrying around all day, the 700D is obviously the smallest in the hand and 7D the biggest with the 60D somewhere in the middle.

I'd also take the 7D weatherproofing with a pinch of salt. As far as I remember there's no weatherproof crop (EF-S) lenses which you'd need with a filter in order for the weatherproofing to work.

I moved from a 400d recently to a 700d and could not be happier . Got it from DR in 3 days over a weekend and it feels a real step up from the 400d .

The other thing drawing me towards the 700d is that it comes with the 18-55 lens, which apparently is not too bad (the others would be body only).

The kit lens that came with my 350 isn't fantastic so don't use it very often.

Yeah I think all of the kit options for the xxxD cameras are pretty decent for the money. They've all been tweaked slightly recently and released with STM motors other than the 15-85mm which is the kit lens option I'd recommend if you only have one lens but it is a little more expensive.

I started with the 18-135mm STM on my 650d and the extra 50mm at the end wasn't as useful as another 3mm at the wide end would have been.

I'd look at a used 60D which can be had for around £350-400 which gives you just enough left for a 17-85mm.

Biased but I just bought my first ever DSLR and she's a 700D. Absolutely in love!

Also check out wex if you do go for one, got a cracking deal with a brilliant camera bag, sd card and a 50 quid voucher thrown in.
