Dpreview article
  • 10fps
  • DIGIC III image processing
  • Up to ISO 6400
  • All new AF system with 19 cross type sensors and 26 AF assist sensors
  • 3" LCD with live preview mode
  • Integrated sensor cleaning
  • 300K actuation shutter life

List price should be $3999 so probably £2500 by the time it gets here. It's certainly a cracking upgrade from a 30D but I'm not going to be running out to replace my MkII quite yet.

10fps

Lol, that's the thing which made me turn my eye. Well I could only dream of this camera lol, maybe in a few years time it could become a reality but now it is a no no lol.

There were rumours that it was going to be annouced this morning :)
wooohoo - it looks good

Reading through the specs it's a big upgrade even for current 1DMKIIn owners !

Yeah, there are significant improvements across the board but personally I can't justify the outlay at the moment when my MkII is still alive.

A few additional things stuck out for me:
- Buffer for 110 shots, wow
- 1.3x crop. I got the impression that Canon was going to drop that in favour of either 1.6 or FF.
- Not a massive change in resolution from the mk2.
- Built in sensor cleaning. Guess the 400D did bring something to the party
- Updated metering and AF
- A first for SLRs (to my knowledge), in that you can use the LCD to "frame" the shot, as per compacts.

It's clearly a good upgrade for a mk2, but isn't close to replacing the 1DS, and interestingly leaves the 5D looking good for high resolution shots.
Should make a brilliant sports camera.

Absolutely, they've taken a brilliant sports camera and given it a bigger buffer, faster shutter and better AF!

This is not helping my "can't justify the price" argument :(

I'm wondering about availability on launch. Perhaps I should I get my order in now :)

If I remember correctly Fuji and Olympus have a D-SLR each that has a Live LCD preview. From my point of view it's not something I would use much but I guess it's a step forward and will be used by some people.

The details of this new camera and possibly future releases that excite me (sort of ;)) are:

Mirror lockup as part of the live view and not a freaking menu option buried several levels deep in custom functions.
14 bits per channel.
Extra cross AF points.
14 bits per channel.
Highlight control.
And did I say 14 bits per channel? :D

I'm hoping Canon designed the 40D from the 1DMKIII down and not from the 400D up. It'll probably be announced over the next couple of days.

theres a bit of a dig from Phil, you cant blame canon though, leaks happen all to often.

As has become 'the norm' with Canon we had no information on this product before announcement, so no preview or analysis. I'm sure many were expecting an EOS 30D update, well not yet.

Phil: As has become Canon's approach we had no information on this camera before embargo, this lack of trust they show with their most important (and reliable) publications only continues to damage their image within the industry.

Anyone else noticed the new 16-35f2.8LII that has been announced, ive been planning on getting a 16-35 ever since I sold my 20d+efs10-22, and I think Ill keep a close eye on this new lens.
