New car for commute

I get around the same as the OP in the current weather from a (at the moment) 50 mile commute in the Civic - it might improve a bit over an extra 30 miles but nowhere near enough to justify buyuing a new car (before his actually dies anyway).

Realistically he might get a 50mpg car, that's fair enough if and when the 306 actually dies or it's just a case of wanting something a bit newer but otherwise I'd say it's best to wait. The likes of the L&K octavia looka very good car for the money

How is that the case? When I was doing 80 miles a day, mostly (but not entirely) motorway miles, I got between 50 and 55 mpg from a 2.0 TDCi Mondeo. I'd hope that was better at cruising than a Clio!

I wasnt actually suggesting that he should get a clio, i was just using it as an example of the turd cars people end up with when they want 50+ mpg. stuff like 2.0d mondeos/passats/156/octavia etc will get a good 45-50+ combined once you factor in a bit of town driving and traffic. Its nothing to shrug at as they are great and very efficient, but if you think 45 is bad you really are going to struggle to find something that will be noticeably better.

Exactly. Even with my driving profile (which includes almost 0 motorway), I'm averaging 48.7MPG out of my A4.

Wait until it dies, then buy something with the 1.9 TDI VAG engine in it.

This.

Great position to be in having the cash ready and reading some reviews while the 306 is still going.

242k? Blimey, those things do go on for a while!

Echoing the thoughts here, ignore the hatches like the Leon though - thats not really a step up from what you've got. An Octavia or Passat would be a good shout

running a 406 estate, 255k on the clock and still going.

Keep her serviced with good oil and parts, you'll never be let down

None of the HDi engines will run on veg oil. You'd need the older XUD engines (1.9 or 2.1).

I have a 2.1 406 with 221k on the clock, but it's only ever run on pump diesel. Fantastic car.

A 406 is definitely an option. Reliable, comfortable and economical, and you can get a decent HDi for under £2k. The 90s a bit slow, the 110s are a bit nicer to drive but still manage 50mpg combined, up to nearer 60mpg on a long run.
