New car ideas

Hi all

I currently drive a Seat Leon Cupra and whilst its a good car I fancy a change now. Now I know its a bit sad but I would like something with a sportier image - I'm fed up of having to explain to people why I bought this car, its performance etc. I'm open to all ideas, here are my rough criteria...

Budget: £5-6k.
Age: Ideally something made within the last 10 years.
Performance: It would be nice to have something that could keep up with the Cupra.
Reliability/running costs: It is my daily driver albeit I have a 4 minute commute so it not the biggest issue.

You won't get anything massively better than a LC for 5-6k.

Why would you change your car for the sake of what people think? :/ If you are happy with it then keep it.

I would keep the cupra, for what your looking for it seems the best car. Just spend a bit and get the LCR wheels and kit put on it and lower it a bit along with a remap. Sorted. :)

Its not the reason I want to change though, I knew some one would respond like this.

In your opening post you said you were fed up explaining what it is and why you bought it and wanted something with a sportier image.

Now you say that's not the reason you want to change.

So is it the reason or not? Make your mind up.

No, I said I fancy a change now - but I guess you ignored that bit.

Anyway this is boring me now.

Well for that money you could easily get a very nice 2000 model, classic shape, with money left for the first stage of mods.
Or if you want a newer car, you can buy a bugeye, or if you're lucky maybe a blob eye WRX. Heavier and thus slower in acceleration compared to the classic.
For that money I would get a classic, get a second hand decat exhaust, get it mapped, and have a nice 280ishbhp with similar torque. In comparison to your Leon, once rolling as standard I'd say they're level pegged. But in greasy conditions you can just floor it from the lights and go in the Impreza.

However, fuel and insurance you will find to be much much more expensive that the Leon, so I'm not entirely sure it would be worth it in your case?

Fuel and insurance isn't too much of an issue. I think I would have to stretch my budget as I really don't like the bug-eye ones!

Could you recommend me a good forum for Imprezas?

Nissan 200SX S14a Touring. Should get a nice late model, fuly loaded and fun fun fun. Plus MASSIVELY tunable if you want to improve things later. RWD fun, good looks, and a turbo. What more do you want???

Just sounds like he wants something a bit interesting to me.

The Leon Cupra is a nice car, and I was thinking of getting one myself but found it was just to dull. It's quick and handles alright, but it still just looks like a family hatchback.

It's the same reason I find powerful saloons dull, as while they can be awesome pieces of engineering they are still the saloon shape which just makes me think of family or business car.

To the OP

You might find that you don't need something as quick as the Cupra to have the same feeling. If you get something low like an MR2 or MX5 then it will feel a hell of a lot quicker anyway. Depends on how many seats you need. ;)

I really like these, I remember looking at them when i got my current car but the decent ones were hard to find and a bit over budget. I will check them out again, thanks. Do you know what sort of power I would be looking at from basic mods? (re-map I guess?)

You hit the nail on the head here and explained it a lot better than I did:p

I'm not a fan of MR2s but I have considered an MX5. I guess it will probably feel as quick/quicker than my car despite being slower. I like the idea of a convertible too, thanks.

I'd say the 200SX fits the bill perfectly - however, outside of petrolhead circles, nobody seems to know what it is, which is something that seems to bother the OP.
Kate is always getting asked what it is, our neighbours either side think it is a Probe (!) and a Skyline, depending which of them you speak to :D

So you'd still be in the same position as the Cupra (having to explain it to everyone) but if that doesn't bother you (and IMO it shouldn't) then they are a great choice. 5k should net you a very clean well looked after W plate one.

Oh and a small point but one to bear in mind - if you get into the 200SX and drive it like you would drive the Cupra fast you will be thrown off the road in a dramatic fashion. Probably not in the dry, but as soon as it gets damp the change will be very noticeable :)

Kate paid £3200 for this one, the paint is poor (chipped, swirly, arches going bubbly) and the mileage high hence the price.
