New car recommendation

Thanks, I'm having a look at the Volvo V40. Currently trying to decide between the V40, A3, and the Golf :)

Octavia is good, but I don't really like the look of it compared to the others. So still a maybe, and may stop by the local dealer to get a closer look.

I'll chime in on the A3, it's a great car, build quality is great, interior is great, but it is extremely boring to drive. Which is exactly what I wanted but if you want something fun don't get the A3. Also the 3 door can't comfortably seat more than 2 people.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'd be OK with a car that is ordinary to drive, as I wouldn't know the difference until I've driven a car that is noticeably more fun to drive. In a few years time I may be after something very different :)

IMHO golf is nicer than A3, cheaper/better spec. Volvo V40 isn't as good to drive but it's got super comfy seats and the D4 engine is very nice.

Every time I look at VW's pricing, I normally find that its not cheaper at all!

Not going to go through the spec page by page to compare kit, but taking 2 similar models

- Audi A3 S-Line Navigation, 1.4 TFSI 6spd manual - £23,030
- VW Golf GT 1.4 TSI 6Spd manual - £23,615

The A3 will be worth more when you sell it to.

Spoke to a dealer about the A3, and there's no stock for it in the UK, and I'd have to wait till March.

Don't think I can wait till then so now I've got to find another one :(

I have a question about financing a car with PCP. If at the end of your contract the car is worth less then the GFV, what happens? Do you just have no equity to go towards your next car? Do you have to pay off that difference to give the car back?

The future value is guaranteed (hence the G) so you can always hand it back. (subject to any damage etc)

However, this is really unlikely to happen - the GFV should be set a lot lower than the actual expected market value. But do your own research into used values to make sure it's sensible - if you're putting in a few grand deposit and will only have a few hundred quid equity at the end of it, you may find yourself in a bad position!

Thanks for that.

I'm going down to my local dealers to look at the A3 and 1 series.

I want to have a look at the Golf too, but should I avoid them given VW's recent problems?

The diesel emissions thing shouldnt remotely bother you - it makes little to no difference to the consumer. If you are bothered, it affected the A3 as much as the Golf. I'd personally avoid them because they're awful value for money but see what sort of deal they'll do for you.

The emissions doesn't bother me too much, I suppose it's whether I can trust that VW haven't done anything else that is dodgy with the car.

I'm considering the Golf as the Match Edition model is pretty similar to competitor models that I'm after in price. A3 was my top choice, but unfortunately no stock for what I'm after.

If there are no obvious reasons to not go for a Golf, I'll get something booked at my local dealer then.

Cheers
