New car time needs loads of MPG

Buy the wife a 5-6k run around for the kids and use the 5k saved, on petrol for the 320d?

not the difference will be anywhere near that even over a couple of years if you factor everything in.

Used Polo Bluemotions are still pretty expensive. And can you imagine doing a journey in a Polo Bluemotion? It is the most pointless car in the entire world - designed for uber fuel economy yet built for town where you dont do enough miles to care about fuel economy.

Well done.

When I was having to do a lot of motorway miles and pay for fuel I got a Yaris 1.4TD. Drop the speed to 65ish on the motorway and was able to get about 72mpg.

Quite a nice car too.

Why would you do that? ...why would you put yourself through that?

You bought precisely the wrong kind of car for doing a lot of motorway miles, this car was designed for pottering about the city at no more than 30mph. I know it can sit on a motoeway at 70, in the same way that you can use a spoon to dig a 6ft by 6ft hole ...but you wouldn't. Use the Right tool for the job etc.

Because it got high MPG, and cheapest company car tax bracket.

I was about to be spending 250k on a house, and I didn't want to be burning money on fuel.

Hmm, well I suppose if you aren't using all the remaining fuel, at least there is more left for me.

So I guess the car must have been extremely cheap as well, otherwise it obvioulsy wouldn't make sense to buy it??

Well if it was a company car presumably all he paid was the minimal amount of company car tax, circa 35 quid a month.

Just think of the choice of cars if you are prepared to pay a little extra. I guess some people just don't care they are effectively driving a washing machines around.

This. Nearly as economical in real life as the eco-Polo but with a proper engine. Seats are far more comfy too.
what's the point?
either do eco thing properly or get a bigger car that's good for long motorway journeys.
why go halfway with a fabia?

I agree.

Explain the Leon diesel thing.
I didn't recommend a leon diesel.
Do you mean explain why I own a leon diesel?
I don't live in the UK, so diesel is significantly cheaper than petrol.

Also next time you go on holiday stay in a tent that'll save money as well.

Yes, 35 quid a month, next tax bracket is 18%, which from a 13% tax bracket is a difference, esp given the usual reduction in fuel economy, and increased price of the car.

Fine if you realy don't like cars and just see them as a method to get from A-B. Like Fox said though, there are lots of ways to save money, that you wouldn't nomrally consider, why do it with your car.

I never really will understand it though, as I love cars and my car is very important to me.

Understandable, I see the otherside, means to an end. I'd rather spend my money on something else, so why not just give some options for the origional poster, rather than having a go about what I picked and why?
