new car

I think I'm right in saying that the Passat is (inside at least) much bigger. The Octavia IIRC is VW Golf based, the Skoda equivalent to the Passat is the Superb is it not?

No mate the octavia is passat based, the fabia is golf based.

you have totally contradicted yourself there. first you say the octavia is golf based, then you say "no mate, the octavia is passat based".

It is golf based, along with the Leon and A3.

No, he just didn't quote Scottland properly.

The original octavia is the same size and shape as the passat,if it was based on the golf i'd like to know why the boot in the golf is so small in comparison. :p

I don't know the in's and out's of it. But I presume it's a new body shell on the same chassis [as the golf].

It's also not the same shape, the Passat is a Saloon - whereas the Octavia is a Hatchback :p

Why are you disputing hard facts?

The Skoda Octavia is built on the same platform as the VW Golf, Seat Leon and Audi A3. I don't care if its pink with yellow spots on, or 10 ft long, the fact remains. It is NOT Passat based.

sorry for a bit of OT, but am I right in saying that if im not happy with how a polo drives then the fabia would be exactly the same?

I stand with head bowed down and hands out to be slapped about them. :o

Wheres your facts from ? The new model is golf based, the early model was passat based.

The early model was NOT Passat based! Where are YOUR facts from?

The Octavia shares components and engineering expertise with the Audi A3, SEAT Toledo and VW Golf/Bora - which should put pay to any stale old jokes about the Skoda marque. The Czech car maker has hurtled up-market with these keenly-priced and well built medium hatchbacks and estates, which are essentially Volkswagens in all but name.

Galvanised body has 10-year warranty. VW Golf Mk IV underpinnings. Excellent 1.6 litre 100 bhp, 1.8 litre 125 bhp petrol engines and 1.9TDI with 90 or 110 bhp.

Do I have to continue or is that enough for you?

The Octavia is VW Passat / Audi A4 sized. Good luck finding a 3 year old 25k mile A4 for £9k.

You're right, you couldn't get an A4 of that spec for that money. You would have to compromise on the year or mileage for 9 grand. I was just trying to point out that a 3 year Octavia at 9 grand is somewhat excessive when Skoda is supposed to represent VFM. :)

And while we're at it, what platform is the A4 based on? I was under the impression that the A6 was Passat based? (Or vice-versa)
