New Car

Not a fan but should be decent enough fun, I'd have much rather had the MR2 but different strokes for different folks.

Agreed on the tenses comment, your posts are quite annoying to read! (as are mine probably since they are littered with spelling mistakes)

What year is the TF? They're decent, fun cars. I much prefer the looks to the MR2 roadster. They have their quirks, and the later ones whilst having nice feature like a glass rear screen, often have shoddier build quality. Saying that, they're less likely to have HGF.

Also are you getting the alloys on the one in the picture? They're pretty rare if you are, but I suspect they'll be the normal ones.

It's 02 plate TF as for the alloys they will be the 12spoke 160 alloys but i have managed to get my hands on a set of the black ones featured in the picture.

Wow, crap thread.

By 'my new car' you really mean 'omg I saw a car for sale'.
Would it be a fantastic thread if it was a BMW?

No, it would be a fantastic thread if actually was your new car rather than one you've seen at a dealer and not even test driven yet let alone agreed a deal on.

You are just ASKING to be ripped off.

If you're really going to get it, check the usual things (I'm sure you're aware, you own an F). If it's just had its cambelt changed, ask about HGF. If they recently replaced the head gasket at the dealers I'd walk. They probably haven't fixed the underlying problem. The water pump might have caused it. You don't want to be landed with a car with a warped head.

The underlying problem of most (99%?) K Series HGFs is the head gasket design itself.

Yes and no. The HG might as well have been a piece of cardboard. Saying that, it often failed due to coolant escaping and the head warping. Rusted underfloor coolant pipes and coolant expansion tank cap seals wearing out are causes that spring to mind. The point I was trying to put across was that if the HG had been replaced, the head might still be warped, causing the problem to recur, or continued escape of coolant.

Well I was only disagreeing to your point where you said if the HG had been done by the garage then walk away. I'd rather buy a K Series engined car knowing the head gasket had been replaced rather than know it will almost definitely need changing soon if it hasn't.

What are underfloor coolant pipes by the way (I don't know a lot about the MGF)? They have metal pipes going to the heater box under the floor?

I guess I would have been weary of the car, as it could well have been traded in due to HGF and hastily repaired to flog to the next unsuspecting punter. I'd want to know that it had done a few miles with the new HG before I bought it.

The MGF/TF radiator is in the front and the engine is in the rear. The pipes are quite exposed and are prone to rust, then rupture, leading to HGF.
