I think I raised a thread asking this a couple of years ago, but I gave up on getting a new card 18 months ago. I see the 3080Ti FEs are instock and, whilst cheaper than they were, they're still a huge chunk of cash.

I game 3440x1440 and still play the same games such as Skyrim (heavily modified, Mass Effect games, STALKER ANOMALY etc). I've recently discovered Witcher 3 and have sank many hours into that, and with the game maxed out (minus hair works) I'm typically getting 50fps, with dips to the 30s in very demanding places. Once more games start to use UE5 I might try more new games, but I've not been enamoured by many new releases which is often why I stick to what I know and like.

I'm still running an 8700k @ 4.8Ghz and have no plans to update my system other than a new GPU.

Just wondering what would be a good shout? I'm keen to see ray tracing in action and may one day give VR a go, so future proofing is a (albeit not super high) factor.

Money wise and spec wise, the 3080Ti is probably over kill? Consider a 3080 TUF or even a 3070? It hasas to be nvidia as I'm committed to GSync.

Cheers!

WRT the 3080Ti being overkill... it looks like next gen will be a big, big performance leap. If games start making use of that, no it won't be! It may even be underkill...

If the goal was to get 60fps minimums, I think you could probably do it with your current games/resolution with a 3060Ti? Something relatively cheap for now, pick up a 4000 series next year? Just a thought :)

Considering that everytime we heard same thing of huge performance of next gen i would take that with a big pinch of salt.I still remember when people offloaded their 2080ti not long ago for 3000 series just for the price bumping back when reality struck.

Reckon one of these would do the job now prices are back down on earth?

Thanks all. I think I'd prefer to step up from the 3060ti. I'm personally sceptical about the rumours of the 4 series; it sounds a lot like the 3000 hype again. There was a lot of real hype over that range, like nothing I'd previously seen and it wasn't a HUGE upgrade over the 2000. Time will tell I guess, but you can bet the 4080 will launch at £1k+. I can't help but feel that if we thought this gen was expensive, then we should prepare for a shock. No doubt so called chip shortages and shipping costs will be used to artificially inflate prices even further and don't forget about the next wave of scalping...

Has anyone gone from 980ti to 3070/3070ti?

TBH 3070ti was my first thought but had a niggle your 8700K might bottleneck? Maybe not at your res.

I'm far from a pro builder, but I'm not convinced it would be a serious problem? It's a few gens old now, but it's a solid cpu with a good OC

I should add that I'm not striving for crazy high fps. It's a 100hz gsync screen so being able to maintain 70-90fps in most games is what I'd like to strive for.

I think a 3080ti is overkill for me.. Looking at various videos comparing the 980ti to the 3080ti,its a massive jump on performance, but it's taking current titles to well over 100fps which is wasted on a 100hz panel.

Hmmm...

I upgraded from a 1070 to 3080 and the improvement was ridiculous, so a 3070 would definitely put a smile on your face. 80% increase over your 980ti?

For that resolution, I'd probably aim for no lower, ideally, than a 3070.

A 3070 - 3080 10/12GB should see you fine. I don't think a 3080Ti would be overkill in terms of spec but as you know, the price does jump up a bit!

P.s. not planning to re-use an old 500W psu. Bit 'spikey' these Ampere cards ;)

I ran a 3060ti at 3440x1440 120hz from launch, and it was ok. Nothing spectacular but enough for maxing out stuff I play like Civ 6, for most recent games I was dialing back the extra fancy settings and definitely not going for ray tracing. I'll be waiting till the next gen stuff now too. I don't PC game much over the summer as the extra heat is not appreciated and the backlog of Switch games is growing.

for what you pay for a 3080 12gb u may as well get a 3080ti fe

id go for a 3070ti,

i just gonna wait till 4000 series before i purchase a 3000 or 4000 card

i know the rumours say twice the performance as 3000 gen but don't they always say that and it never is
