When I go clothes shopping, I tend not to wash first. When I try on trousers I do so without underwear and like to lunge in them several times to get a feeling of their crotchal integrity. Also to see how far they creep between the cheeks during said lunging. Trousers with serious creepage (>75% of the way to kissing the bullet hole) are placed back on the shelves as they are deemed too uncomfortable.

So, next time when you go clothes shopping, give the trousers you try on a smell. They may have hit the mud.

Seriously though, I think I have sensitive skin or something as some new things sometimes irritate my skin if I don't wash them first.

Shirts I always wash first as I like to iron them before I wear them and they seem to iron better after a wash.

Jumpers i don't worry about.

Yeah it goes without saying that stuff that doesn't touch my skin, I don't tend to think about washing until I've worn it a few times or it's dirty.

I used to 'wear straight from the hanger', but my Wife stopped all that milarkey and washes everything before I'm allowed to wear it!
